Emotional attachment to a character in a tower defense game? Especially one that you never get to see on screen, and all development is done purely via the narrative? Oh, and let's also make that character an AI. Sound unlikely? I never would have thought it would be done either - for that matter, I never expected a developer to even bother trying. But in "Defense Grid: The Awakening", the narrative AI who guides you through the game really DOES develop a character that can bring an emotional attachment towards "him" even without any onscreen presence - especially towards the later levels of the story. And it's a pretty cool tower defense game in its own right, too. Strongly recommend checking it out for anyone who likes TD games, OR who wants to see an example of how to develop a seemingly impersonal character through narrative alone. Well done to Hidden Path Entertainment with this one.
