Hands down one of my favorite games I've played in 2020

Iconoclasts is a Metroidvania-styled puzzle platformer with fantastic gameplay, music, and story. It follows the story of Robin, a mechanic, as she travels across the world as chaos ensues and she has to bolt it back together (being vague since this is seriously a game that the story is that important) I got Iconoclasts from Chrono.gg as the last game I got before their Chrono Coin Shop closed and being the most expensive new game they were selling I got it quickly with no clue with what I was getting.

Gameplay of Iconoclasts features the usual platformer getup with a standard jump, solid movement, and a stun gun to shoot things with. Robin has a few more inclusions in her moves like having a ground slam move, or being able grab up ledges. But one of Robin's most versatile moves she has is her trusty wrench. As a mechanic Robin can screw bolts in the world to activate various machinery or use to them to swing across to higher platforms, as the game progresses you get more abilities to use with your wrench and stun gun with that introducing more ways to solve the game's many puzzles, platforming challenges and amazing variety of bosses. Also included is the tweak system where you can choose up to 3 buffs to Robin that can help you out but the catch is that if you get hit you lose a slot and you'll have to fill it up again by defeating enemies. (You can also play as other characters briefly during the story mode which was a nice touch)

Iconoclasts has a pixel artstyle for practically everything in the game and it's some of the smoothest and most beautiful pixel art I've seen in a while. All the sections of the game feel distinct from each other thanks to sheer amount of effort in the environment, visual and enemy designs and animations. Robin and many of the other characters have a cutesy art style which is fairly different from their portrait art but is still animated so well. Like Robin's crawling animation has little tip taps and it was just so adorable, while characters like the Agents have more gritty animations in the same style. Major props for some of the bosses having so much dang movement and speed that it was just amazing is see and fight.

Now I don't really want to spoil the story of Iconoclasts that much since it's definitely one of the best things about that game and something that kept me hooked and invested for the entire journey. LIke during my second session of the game I played it for 12 hours from the 3rd area straight to completion and I was invested in both gameplay and the story. The music here also is pretty awesome and fits the mood perfectly for whatever's going on and you can purchase the soundtrack separately if that interests you.

There were a few criticisms I had with the game, like with bosses' having so crazy moves that it's hard to understand what exactly you need to do to deal damage, while it didn't prevent me from completing the game it did take a few tries and attempts to learn almost everything about the boss' moves. Also a very tiny nitpick is that the health pickups aren't affected by gravity which was annoying when I needed health but the pickup was just a tad bit out of my reach. (Obviously this was me playing without the double jump tweak)

Overall, Iconoclasts is just a fantastic game, with solid mechanics, great music, and an amazing story that left an impact on me. In fact I enjoyed my time with Iconoclasts so much that I even made Fanart of one of the Agents. As the last game I'll ever get from Chrono.gg's Coin Store it was certainly the best game I've gotten from that service and I honestly hope more people will try this game out.
