Early Access Review
If I could give a mixed review I would. I'll give pros and cons.
First pros:
1) Really good base game, it's comfy and it seems to be a spiritual successor to Stronghold 2 (the stronghold game with the largest economy system).
2) It's beautiful, I love the graphics which are amongst the best if not the best of this genre.
3) The interacting and interactive economy system is a delight. There is a lot of depth and you can engage with the economy in different ways - via specialising in various aspects of the economy and using the trading system.
The cons:
1) The game is very limited in every way at this point. Even the economic system should be much bigger, initial economic options are pretty limited and it's especially apparent as you go on that it's quite monotonous. But also, there are so many ways the game really needs to expand in order to be a good full game: multiplayer, diplomacy, different maps, different models for just about everything (buildings, villagers, lord). This is to name but a few. Expansion is also limited and clunky and pushes you down prescribed paths for doing so rather than organically occupying surrounding land and resources outside of your initial province. Basically at this point the game is incomplete.
2) Early access. Part of me understands the need for early access to get more people to play test the game but part of me hates that so many game companies do this and just release an incomplete game at the price of a full game
3) Similar to what I say above, progression in the game feels poor. I want to feel like my village-town-city is getting better in terms of technology and infrastructure and right now it just feels like it's getting bigger. The tech tree will be expanded upon I see, but there needs to be much more content in this regards too.
4) For me (not sure about everyone) the game regularly crashes so I save a lot. I've got a good pc and have no problem playing literally every other game on max settings but in this has crashed approximately 10 times at this point which is frustrating as auto-saves are infrequent enough that often I am replaying quite a lot of time.

Overall, it's a good base game hence the positive review. However, it's very incomplete at this time and given just how incomplete it is, I worry that it will be a while before the game is thoroughly polished. If people want a complete game I'd recommend probably coming back in a year or so, if they want to mess around for a few hours and then come back later then it is satisfying enough that you'll probably play and (like me) look forward to this game being complete.

Has received a lot of hate but it isn't any worse than any other grand strategy game on release. There will be more a lot more content to come, and I look forward to it. The base of the game is very good.

Edit: Having played this game a lot more, I am still really enjoying it and super hyped for the sphere of influence patch. I feel like the negative reviews are mainly people who want every strategy game to be a military focused strategy game, if you want that then this probably isn't for you - it's an economics and politics focused strategy game with a military element to that. That said, if you like economics and politics focused strategy games then this game is great.

Paradox constantly makes amazing strategy games and this could be the best of them all. Incredibly immersive, one can play multiple runs through with the same nation, and every nation feels distinct. 10/10 would recommend, I'd be surprised if there is a better grand strategy game out there
