After two-three long years of Awesomenauts, I thought I might give you my full thoughts about this game, now that we are getting close to the end of the Starstorm DLC development and the new Matchmaking server.

First of all, my feelings toward this game are mostly positive. I love the general gameplay style, it's like Smash Bros meeting MOBAs like Dota and LoL, 2D and stuff.
Music, oh boy, Sonic Picnic has really given their best with the game's soundtrack.
Visuals, they're great, I love the 1980's cartoon style Ronimo has been going for, same goes for the characters and lore in general.
Ronimo keeps updating the game with more characters, visual and gameplay advancements, new features such as new bots you can play with, when not having players in game, new game modes in custom games, skins and announcers. It's the reason the game is still going on for it's 3rd year on Steam, has got PS4 release that is also updated from time to time, and Xbox One -version coming.
Community involvement is great thing with this game, as I myself have made some sort of "career" on YouTube somewhat because of Awesomenauts. We've walked the path of YouTube together for these +2 years. And I thank both this game and it's developers with cooperation :) Also, the community of players might sometimes feel childish etc, but there are a lot of smart people who strive to keep Awesomenauts, well, awesome. We have had some great tournaments and other events, our suggestion for character voice lines, skin and/or character ideas are passed down to the game in one form or another, and in example, Replays have given us options to make more different kinds of gameplay videos to YouTube.

Of course, this game has it's issues. Since Ronimo can't afford to rewrite the netcode for Awesomenauts to enable dedicated servers, players have to deal with P2P, which will cause problems if 1. Player/players have faulty connection and/or 2. players involved are from different countries. Of course you can limit the options your matchmaking queue goes for, but it's a bit flawed until Ronimo implements their new Matchmaking servers around the release of Overdrive expansion (which isn't required to use the matchmaking servers, mind you). Connection problems aren't fixed by that, but at least matchmaking will be more "fair" towards players of different skill levels and you are less likely to be put in a game against players from other side of the world.
Speaking of skill levels, new players might find problems to start the game if they skip beginner missions and jump right into the online games (which is not recommended). Skill level might vary even in the higher leagues of leaderboards, but there are cases that new players quit the game because they don't feel the need of commitment to learn the basics and advanced techniques of the game and it's characters.
Then there's character balance. Some characters are already pretty balanced in a sense, but then there are one's that are doomed to be bad or too good. But, balancing acharacter isn't a walk on a sunshine, it's like stacking a house of cards. One slip and the whole house of cards might collapse, of course, then you have to start over again, but once you get it right, man, it feels satisfying. Even though you're missing couple of cards, which in this game are incoming characters and maps.

But, my likes, which are plenty, clearly overpower the dislikes towards this game, and over 2000 hours in the game, I say that I love this game. I believe that Ronimo can and will strive to make this game stand out and stay alive for a long time, and I'm willing to stay with Ronimo until the day Awesomenauts has to move to a higher plane of existence.

For about 10 euros (and hefty amount of sales/giveaways you can get this game from) this game is worth your time for at least those 10 hours. DLCs are mostly skins and announcers, and the Starstorm Expansion, but even without those you can get some solid hours in to this game. It's also great with friends, be it normal games or Custom games. With the upcoming matchmaking servers, Overdrive Expansion with three new characters, not to mention free character Ix the Interloper from the 2nd Design-a-naut contest and Starstorm station map AND character art updates for older characters, this game gets the love it deserves from the company who made it, and it should get the love it deserves from you, too.

Buy it. Play it. NOW!
