This game is a long time favorite of mine. I played it when it was first released and continued after it debuted on the steam library. This game has improved graphics from when it was first released, however, substantially different compared to other games such as Civilization. I highly highly recommend this game to my friends, because although Civilization is a terrifically addictive and fun game we don't all have time to spend the extravagant amount of time it requires. This game is very similiar and can be completed within a couple of hours. The main difference I noticed between the two was that Rise of Nations is based in real time and Civ is turn based. I'm sure we all appreciate games not lasting up to 8+ hours, although they are supremely fun.
