Early Access Review
Humanity was almost wiped out by an invading alien force. You are in charge of a walking city housing what remains of humanity and your goal is to get them off the planet. In order to do this you send out mech teams to explore, kill bugs, and gather resources. Your ultimate goal is finding and assembling shuttle parts you find scattered across the globe. Your resources go towards manufacturing new weapons and components to customize your mechs and to keep your walking city from falling apart, quite literally. In order to stay competitive with the ever-spreading and evolving bug horde you also conduct research, unlocking new mechs, weapons and technologies.

The customisation of mechs is very in-depth, involving building reactors, weapons, balancing stats like weight and armor, and more. You're free to explore a large variety of builds and setups. What about a close-quarters combat mech with rapid-fire shotguns? Or would you prefer spraying the bugs with napalm from hundreds of meters away? Not every build is viable in every situation however, as you may find out to the dismay of your pilots.

Combat is fairly straightforward, with your mech pilots having some degree of autonomy and you being able to give them basic orders. But without your guidance (and copious amounts of artillery strikes) they are doomed to fail. Smart positioning and tactics, weapon and equipment composition are vital to success and a singular lapse in judgement can mean the loss of an experienced pilot and his mech or worse.

There is a lot of depth to the game, which often isn't very well (if at all) explained, with the tutorial being the equivalent of someone handing you a bunch of unhelpful sticky notes. It's possible to get shredded on the first tutorial defense mission, giving your first run an unncessary difficulty spike before it has even properly started. Your first few hours can be incredibly frustrating if you don't bring some patience, willingness to learn by trial-and-error or don't want to read a tutorial or guide.

If you can get past the initial learning hurdles however, you are in for a challenging XCOM-esque game about fighting absolute monstrosities with mechs to save what remains of humanity!
