This is the abbreviated version of FF7 and stuff related to that game but done in a way that doesn't explain much of anything. Instead of 'CliffNotes' this is 'BiffNotes' like Biff Tanner from Back to the Future.

Full impressions linked here[imgur.com].

I couldn't force myself to play the whole thing. Just no. I'd rather go replay the original full games.

Lost a bet and publicly posting reviews on these kinds of games. Yay. Here we go.

Half an hour to download the game with the slowest possible in-game download speed I've seen since the PS4/PS5 Sony Japan-server download speed days.

Not even done with the tutorial and the top middle part of the screen gets absolutely spammed with popup notifications of people I don't know getting things and doing things I don't care about.

Yes, this is one of THOSE games. Yikes! Avoid if you value your sanity.

The artwork seems rushed/lazy/cheap, but it doesn't appear to be AI-generated artwork at first glance. Yet the Steam store page clearly discloses that these are AI-generated characters later 'touched up' by actual human artists. I don't know how much 'touching up' the artists did but they're clearly overworked/underpaid because the artwork is mediocre at best and pretty bad in some parts. Again pay attention to the extremeties (hands/feet) to see some very awkward/broken fingers and other odd artifacts.

As a final word, I will say this. I appreciate that there is an idol game that exclusively features adult women instead of teenagers/schoolgirls. Unambiguously all adult women. The excessive fetishistic creepiness of the PDFile idol industry in east-asian territories (most notably Japan, South Korea, and China) is something I've avoided for the longest time.

If nothing else you get the idol fantasy here without dealing with minors whatsoever. If that's your thing, then enjoy!
While this game wasn't for me that doesn't mean you may not enjoy it.

Never thought I'd review one of these games, however if I lost a bet then so be it.

  • You have to consume other units to level up your units, no actual 'exp' items are gained from what I've seen (only account exp not unit exp items). This makes collecting the girls you want significantly more time-consuming and difficult unless you have extra 'fodder' units to sacrifice. After a certain point you stop obtaining those altogether outside of the occasional daily reward. This means your f2p progression is hard-locked to repeat-farming prior easier stages (on 4x speed but without any sweep function). This must be done for every girl individually unless you choose a stage that starter level 1 units can complete. Most f2p mobile games would at least wait until a full chapter is complete before doing this, but THIS game never wants to wait. Like an impatient gooner they wanna splooge as fast as possible and damn the consequences to the unsatisfied partner.

  • AI-generated slop. Even the artwork and girls look very AI-generated with lazy/minimal animation. The scenes look like barely-animated GIFs from the 1990s that would load up in several minutes on a 33.3k baud modem. Totally not speaking from experience...

  • Battles are brainless and based purely on stats instead of strategy. Either you have the numbers to beat the enemy or you don't. It is a binary equation. Rarely will you be able to counter an enemy using specific (premium gacha-only) units with specific affinities (that aren't explained in the brief tutorial despite aggressively holding your hand).

  • This is a mobile port with all the issues that entails. They didn't even bother replacing the word 'tap' with 'click' as if that's TOO MUCH EFFORT to find/replace words in the game before crapping out a PC build. On my computer it refused to do Full Screen even when pressing Alt + Enter multiple times throughout playtime. So no fullscreen, fine ok.

  • Despite the cheap obviously-AI-generated artwork and music (who actually 'developed' this again?) the game is extremely expensive and aggressively-monetized. Play literally any other H-game. You might as well throw down money for a decent one like HuniePop instead of putting any money into these fee-to-pay mobile ports.

  • Think of all those cheesy terrible H-games you've ever played. This is worse. The script has numerous typos, errors, and abrupt sentences, the hallmark of two scenarios: poor translation and/or AI-generated text.

  • The lack of proper disclosure of AI-generated content is a massive red flag. Look literally in the screenshots on the Steam store and see hallmarks of AI-generated work (the hands/fingers, broken fingers at weird angles, etc). They did try to cover it up slightly (no obvious 6+ fingers stuff) but they did their best to hide hands/fingers in most poses whenever possible.

This game is the best game of all time? Maybe.

My background is someone who's contributed several well-regarded mods for the original SNES version of the game including a useful bugfix patch (Racing Fixes) that became merged with the main 'Chrono Compendium' combined bugfix patch. I've seen the beauty within the chaos by opening up the SNES rom in Temporal Flux and just staring, mouth-agape, in sheer awe at how wonderfully it was constructed. Then remember it was constructed this way without such modern GUI-friendly tools as Temporal Flux and this was all done back in the 1990s!

If you are reading this then chances are you may already own the game on another platform. Please give this game a good solid playthrough, especially if you've never played it before. Even if you have, you may have missed the new additional content that used to be exclusive to the Nintendo DS release and it is worth going through at least once just to experience it.

The characters are well-written, endearing, and usually not as trope-y as typical anime characters nowandays. There's surprising amounts of depth to Magus in particular that people may miss if they skip sidequests and/or speed through the dialogue scenes. Again, remember this was written back in the 1990s so all the stuff that is commonplace tropes now wasn't as overexposed back then.

The worst part of the game is the long drawn-out drudgery to get the Masamune (aka 'GrandLeon') sword for your party member Glenn. Easily the weakest part of the game that is very much a 'guide required' portion even though the story implications are fantastic for character development. You have to run around and go to specific places in an exact specific order and then talk to specific NPCs in an exact specific order to trigger the next event, otherwise you'll be stuck wandering around what to do. They made this a mandatory part of the main storyline progression so you can't skip or bypass it at all (without glitching/cheating somehow).

A secondary detriment to the game is the objectively good/bad techniques specific to certain characters like Crono himself (Luminare) and the imbalancing amongst specific characters like Marle or Glenn. Though again back in those days things were designed to be 'fun' not necessarily for perfect balancing.

Finally, a personal grudge of mine against the original design of the game was the absolute BS in the 'Reptite Cave' when you first visit Prehistory and go through a 'party' story event. Certain enemies (drillers or w/e they're called) have to drill a hole for you to proceed down the correct path. On emulation, this can be accelerated with a fast-forward feature but no such feature exists on original hardware nor on the Steam release. Without save states or fast forwarding, this Reptite Cave area becomes an absolute chore of a slog to get through without enemies RNG digging a specific hole in a specific way to take you along a specific 'correct' path in order to reach the end and continue the game.

I hated the entire Reptite Cave scenario so much that I modified it on the SNES version (Reptite Reshuffle) and moved all the rewards to a location that is 100% guaranteed accessible and negating nearly all the nonsense regarding the specific RNG garbage of the original design. This is the type of design that has aged poorly and that people rarely talk about; it is BS design to elongate the playtime so people don't realize the game was under 20 hours long for something that (originally) cost $70+ USD in 1995 so about $170 USD in 2025 USD.

The game is well above-average but it isn't perfect. It isn't a 10/10. At best it can be an 8/10 or 9/10 if you're really a sycophant, but anything higher is a disservice to all the fantastic amazing homages to Chrono Trigger that have come out since then which manage to not only honor the game but implement far better story pacing and more modernized QoL features on top of it. One such game is the well-beloved 'Sea of Stars' but another lesser-known game is 'Geo Mythica'. I encourage everyone to play the demo and drop the developer some kudos and love for an awesome hidden gem of a game.

All in all, this is motherloving Chrono Trigger so PLAY IT however you can! This PC Steam port is still rough around the edges so mods are highly recommended!

TLDR: Buy this game. Yes I know Chrono Trigger (at time of writing) is $4 USD but throw this into your cart as well. You won't be disappointed. This is a very easy and strong 'RECOMMENDED'.

And if you aren't going to buy this game now then at a minimum please consider showing the game dev some kudos/love on the Steam forums and Discord. They've worked super hard on making this amazing game!

Disclosure: I am/was a beta-tester of the game and have good relations with the dev 'Chris Guin'. I have NOT been provided any monetary compensation/gifts to post this review nor have I been 'encouraged' to give a review (positive or otherwise) in any way. I'm doing this because I want to and nothing else.

  • I immediately saw the potential of the game from the very first few minutes. The Chrono Trigger references are numerous and you will likely appreciate them more if you're familiar with retro games (though it is easter-egg stuff, not required knowledge). Chrono Trigger and Deus Ex are both my loves but Chrono Trigger is my first love ;)

  • Battle system is real-time-with-pause for manually selecting commands/targets, your partner AI is simple but effective (attack my target, attack any target, defensive-only, etc). It takes some practice but the tutorials are pretty awesome :)

  • Beware: 'Hard for No Reason' (HfNR) is exacly as it says. Don't select it unless you really want a soul-crushing challenge! I would STRONGLY recommend playing on 'Normal' difficulty for your first playthrough, however you CAN still play everything on that 'HfNR' difficulty if you are using consumables and spending your money wisely on buff and healing consumes. Don't underestimate or skimp out on consumes!

  • Keep at least 1 of every type of food for a sidequest later. There are plenty of foods you want to stock up on but be sure to double-check the 'price per HP restored' ratio on each one; some are clearly better than others and the game lampshades one food in particular.

  • Music is 100% authentic Famitracker-created music that works on a real Famicom/NES!

  • Graphics/palette are authentic retro-styled with a few minor QoL adjustments.

  • Gameplay is a mixed bag, I gotta be real about it. YMMV (your mileage may vary), but I enjoyed it personally.

  • Story is very much retro-inspired with equal parts silly and serious. Again I enjoyed it but YMMV if you are into this kind of stuff or not.

  • Content Rating: If I were to give an age rating for the game, I'd say equivalent of 'PEGI 12'. Bloodless violence against mostly non-humanoid creatures. No MTX nonsense: you buy the game and you get the full game; simple and easy! Zero 'lewd' content. A 'save the world' plot. Learn about new languages and cultures in an organic way! A playable dog! What more could you want!? :)

Played this back in beta and during launch. What an absolute clusterpork of a mess. Streamers getting sniped by attention-seeking script-kiddies with neither rhyme nor reason.
Fast forward a few years; has anything improved?

No. No it has not. It has not improved one bit. In fact I'd argue everything has gotten absolutely WORSE by comparison.
The greed of Hotta Studio has been magnified a thousand-fold. Like a swarm of absolutely greedy goblins looking for treasure, they ruthlessly and violently ransack the hearts and minds of their audience to forcefully compel them to spend and then spend and then keep spending. It is never ENOUGH spending. Spend more. Keep spending more you filthy paypig!
Spending in this game is a mistake. If you spent any money on this game over the past few years you ARE the problem. Your spending actively harmed not only this game but the entire gacha gaming and overall gaming market.

Certain games need to die. They need to be taken out back and given a sweet dose of shotgun to the head to put them out of their misery. This is one of those games.

Unfortunately the zombified husk of a corpse has been trotted out over and over. The executive roaches at Hotta Studio don't care what anyone thinks of them so long as they make any amount of money. However they aren't even doing well in the money department compared to how much money they've been spending on marketing alone.

To compare this game to Genshin is an insult to all mobile games. This game is worse than Genshin, worse than WuWa, worse than any other mobile game on the market almost without exception.

Hotta Studio are not just clowns, they are the ENTIRE circus. Not a happy circus either but one of those horrible circuses that end up being tourist traps. The kinds of circuses that keep their animals trapped in tiny cages under a tarp as often as possible whenever they aren't performing. I would venture that Hotta Studio abuses their developers in a similar fashion; keep them out of sight and out of mind, pull them out only to 'perform' a bit and then back in their cages they go. Feed them only what they need and let them live on raman noodles instead.

There are worse games, but this game itself is a nightmare. Avoid it at all costs.

- Major technical issues/hitches and performance problems unchanged since beta years ago
- Mandatory storyline skipping that confuses and disorients new players attempting to understand the story; Hotta Studio seem ashamed of the story they've made, the one they poured so much time and money into creation, so they want to hurry players past it as fast as possible.
- Excessively stingy gacha rates that make Fate: Grand Order seem generous
- Give with one hand and take 10x as much with the other hand
- Not a paypig? Get carried or get lost because the (remaining) miniscule community doesn't care about you
- Creepers, pedos, and lolicons galore. Public chat is the worst of every terrible online chat lobby combined. Zero moderation with reports being ignored.
- A clusterpork of stuff to do but most of it is locked behind paywalls/grindwalls. I hope you enjoy doing daily tasks for months just to have a CHANCE at a good reward. Also hope you enjoy gacha gambling!

Plenty of free games exist that aren't as bad as this one. Being free is not enough anymore.
Also 'Perfect World Entertainment' is a horrible garbage company not worth your time nor your money.
Tell the Chinese roaches to stay in China where they belong instead of dumping their trash onto Steam.

I am pretty happy with this game so far. Incredibly fast, incredibly fun, incredibly challenging even at such an early stage. Boosting is the main way to get around because moving is so slow and clunky. Thankfully the boost meter is pretty plentiful.

Downside is Easy Anti-Cheat which may cause issues in certain aspects but SHOULD eventually be playable on Linux if the devs decide to add support (which they absolutely should) since Easy Anti-Cheat is one of the few that is Linux-compatible. This game would feel amazing on a Steam Deck tbh, holy cow.

That said I only played for a short bit and most of that was configuration and tweaking to get it running on my potato. Surprisingly it works and not only runs but runs decently on my setup at about ~45 FPS with occasional drops down to 30ish in intense firefights. Had to drop to 1280 x 720 (aka 720p) and set lowest everything but this kinda took me back to early PS2 days of older Armored Core games :)

Announcements were too loud by default, recommend having everything at 50% sound volume and then dropping non-essential stuff a bit lower than that.

Only other major downside is the one single melee animation combo I saw which was slow, clunky, and kinda jank. Shielding should be a toggle instead of having to hold it down tbh (especially since this can be 'cheated' by assigning it to numpad 0 or something and putting something on that key to keep it always held down) so this isn't a balancing issue it is an accessibility/comfort issue. If you couldn't fire while shielded I'd get it, but it seems you can fire while shielding without issues.

I play action games with a controller so I can't speak to K&M controls. Apologies to any PCMR diehards but I just can't with this kind of game; it is an arcade-y action mecha game :)

Update: Devs are PDFiles who added in child characters in newest April 2025 update so I'm noping out. What a shame.

Girls Frontline 2: Exilium (GFL2E) is a gacha game where the player can purchase premium currency or earn it via in-game activities. This currency is then used in a random gambling scenario to have a small % chance (less than 3% usually) to obtain a character or a weapon that can drastically shift the power level of your entire team after acquisition.

The main gameplay consists of a a few modes. A 'story' mode (with an additional 'hard' mode after full completion), a boss challenge mode, a few different modes fighting one or more waves of enemies, and various other challenge modes and unique minigames depending on the current event that's running.

The major thing that many people will focus on is the 'dormitory' feature where one can hover like an invisible stalker-ghost and creep on the women and young-teens present in your crew. Among your dailies, one of them requires entering the dormitory and giving 5 'gifts' total to at least one of your characters to receive said daily rewards. Aside from this, affinity gained from gifts is required to advance a character's affinity level with increased stat bonuses and other perks like additional lore/background and voice lines for the character.

Fortunately the actual core gameplay consists of 'xcom lite' tactics. You aren't required to be at the level of enemies and you can often get by even being 10+ levels lower if you utilize the terrain and think tactically about it ahead of time. You're playing 3D chess and need to anticipate at least 2 to 3 moves ahead. Even better, there are rarely any 'BS' moves like random enemies appearing behind your starting lines who immediately ambush/attack your characters on the same turn without warning. Also the tactics here avoids the Arknights situation of requiring specific gacha-only character(s) to complete.

Power creep is a bit of a thing, but gameplay ultimately boils down to whether or not you have a decently-leveled crew of characters and can use your brain to tactically flank and demolish the enemy.

One prominent example of power creep is 'Suomi' which is a character that heals, buffs, and provides shields to all your allies (even NPC ones) in such a way that she's downright essential in nearly every endgame and 'challenge' scenario to the point where event stages sometimes provide 'preset' characters from the gacha since they know how difficult it is without them.

You can start anytime and now is the best time to jump in. Game was released Dec 2024 so as of this review (Feb 2025) it has barely hit the 60 day mark. I love the tactics side of things, using my head and retrying a few times (no penalty or limit on retrying the entire level unlike Arknights) to overcome a challenge. Guides and meta exist, but for a game of this type it really is overkill. You can goof around and still reasonably pass 95% of the content including most of the story without thinking too much. Challenge exists in various 'boss' modes and challenge modes alike.

There are always downsides to any game.

- Several of the characters appear as young-ish teenage girls (specifically Suomi and Colphene) instead of grown adult women; depending on your tolerance for this you may decide this game isn't for you and that's absolutely valid. Don't let anyone bully you into believing otherwise. None of this would matter if the the entire dorm system wasn't a creeper's paradise.

- There are two camera modes for combat, 'Performance Mode' which shows the camera behind the character as they move and attack, then 'Tactical Mode' that forgoes the zoom-in parts and keeps the camera in a semi-overhead viewpoint. Using the Performance Mode camera clearly shows a lot of 'upskirting' of various teenage girls done purposefully by the devs so Tactical Mode camera is strongly recommended to avoid this issue.

All that said, despite the issues there are workarounds to avoid the worst parts of the game for those who aren't perverts and/or PDFs. Enter the dorm only for the dailies and gaining affinity for stat boosts. Use Tactical Mode camera in combat. Avoid the fetishistic skins for said teenage girls that are sold on the cash shop.

Speaking of monetization, how does $20 USD a skin sound? Is that reasonable to you? Lmao. These silly developers have lost their minds. Absolute insanity. If you are in the 'just cosmetic' camp this won't affect you but thought I'd point it out. FOMO 'Limited-Time' skins and stupidly-high pricing galore with 'discounts' from those stupid-high prices to make it seem like a 'deal'.

There's the usual battle pass nonsense and two types of monthly subscription (because one is never enough) as well as the usual pay to win cash shop supplies.

Whether you are F2P or paid, you can not expect any level of support from the developers/staff for any issues you have with your account/gameplay. Just keep that in mind before wasting your time filing support tickets only to get a 5+ day later auto-response that seems AI-generated.

Overall when considering the positives and negatives, one has to ask if the xcom-lite gameplay is worth the rest. If you're done with Xcom and want some free additional tactics gameplay then you could do worse than this game.

Update: Everything I said was completely correct and then some. This game is a shameless exploitative cash-grab by greedy devs who hate providing an actual 'service' to you but still want your money. Be sure to (politely) let them know how you feel about that. Not worth your time or money. Avoid like the plague. Way too much competition to waste time on this nonsense. Original review is below

-----

Several of the prominent female characters (in story and otherwise) look like children and those characters are sexually-fetishized with upskirt panty shots and otherwise. The childish 'semi-chibi' aesthetic in battles makes even the adult women look like children in provocative outfits and poses because that's a completely normal thing in anime for some reason.

This game might have the record for fastest uninstall ever. GG.

C4cat is an appropriate studio name considering they released this explosive diarrhea and dumped it onto the Steam storefront like so many other mobile-game ports before it.

Japan server is RIP and the EULA is all kinds of 'yikes' so it may be useful not to link to your Steam account and just use Guest account and/or C4 account with non-IRL information just in case. Separate email address would also be very useful to avoid potential security issues.

I may update this further; depends on demand but this game isn't worth your time and especially not your money. Seriously read the EULA they 'reserve the right' to terminate your account for 'any reason or no reason' including if you say or do anything they dislike or 'offends sensibilities' w/e that means.

Corporate sycophants and edgelords may defend this garbage but I'm gonna tell it like it is. Hard pass. Onto the next dumpster fire!
