...man.
For my first serious negative review on Steam, I'm really, really upset it had to be this game.
I loved Spark 1 and was hoping to have a fun time with this game too, but unfortunately, this game was extremely disappointing.

Let's start with what I enjoyed. The music is fantastic, as to be expected, visuals were pretty nice for the most part, with the exception of some cutscene animations looking a little jank which I was willing to forgive, and the Final Boss was pretty cool.

Now to actually talk about why this was one of the most draining platformers I've ever experienced, despite only being 2 and a half hours long. Yes, it really is that short.
It's clear the developer is a big fan of Sonic Heroes, as there's a level in this game that's straight up just Hang Castle - which I don't mind, I love that level there and I love it here. I bring up Sonic Heroes specifically because that game lacks in it's controls when you go fast, as you fly all over the place at times, and it can be hard to control.
I can happily say you don't do that in this game. You do the exact opposite.
If you're going at high speeds, good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ luck trying to move even the slightest inch to the left and right. It's nearly impossible, it's like Fark suddenly becomes a tank the moment he reaches high speeds, it's hard to explain but just know it doesn't feel good at all, and same goes for how you earn speed, sometimes it feels like I gain a lot of speed from out of nowhere, it's just weird.

This creates a huge problem as well, as in a lot of the levels, mainly the later ones, the game will ask you to either run up really long walls or have these really straight pathways that expect you to move left and right which you cannot do as previously stated, and since there's no walls to stop you, (and even if there are, these pathways have you going sideways, upside down, etc., so any loss of speed caused by hitting said walls still creates the same problem:) you are very likely to just fall off at every single one of these; to even make it through these sections and progress I had to spam the dash button instead, which the game straight up tells you is slower.
In a supposed high speed platformer, I hated going fast, as it feels terrible, and it sours the entire experience, as I don't think the developer intended for the player to feel dread any time they see a boost pad, all because I fear going too fast to the point I'm uncontrollable. Speaking of levels, they're disproportionately lengthed, with some feeling too short and others feel like they drag on. The level design too can get really confusing and all over the place, especially towards the end of the game.

The bosses are nothing to take note of, either; as is the combat in general. It's just spam to win, with the occasional shield press. I got Platinum Medals on both phases of the Final Boss on my first attempt, without even trying. The power-ups, one of the most fun aspects of the first game, are here, however there's only 5 in the game, and they barely feel like they make any difference. You can also hold 3 of them at a time (technically 4 with your default), as opposed to the first game's 2, which just feels like overkill, especially with so few of them in the game. I pretty much never switched from my default.
As for the story, it's serviceable, and does what it wants to do. Dialogue can feel a bit off at times, but overall I can't really call it bad.

While I have not played Spark 3, and after this I'm not sure if I ever will past maybe the Demo, from my understanding that game seems to be way more polished and fun, so just get that instead.

Sonic Superstars is a really great game, and one I had a blast playing from start to finish.

The controls are superb, it controls exactly how I'd expect it to and I had no issues getting into it, the level design is also really fun overall and there's a good mix of fun stage gimmicks, platforming and speed. I will say later levels have a few more death pits here and there than I'd like, but it didn't affect my enjoyment in the slightest. I've played the Advance trilogy, after all. The visuals are really nice and colourful, and the characters and landscapes are full of personality and life. No complaints there.

The music, however, as some people have pointed out, is a bit mixed. Which is really odd to say for a Sonic game, right? There's not really any bad music in here, per say, the soundtrack is just kind of inconsistent. You'll go from a Mania-style ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ banger of a song, to a pretty average one that uses that damn Genesis drum sound one too many times. Seriously, why is it always the Genesis drum sound??

In terms of plot and LORE(tm), I was satisfied with what the game had to offer, as a Sonic lore connoisseur. I will say though, the True Final Boss/Great Dark Dragon kind of comes out of nowhere, and I wish there was a cutscene showing how it got released from the Dark Egg. Like, it kind of just.. happens, lol. Also I'm still puzzled by The End's cameo, I'm gonna need like 3 weeks to process that one.

Speaking of Final Bosses, man the one at the end of the "Hard Mode" is tough as balls. Took me like 3 hours to beat. It's not even that hard, the attacks are really predictable and have the same pattern pretty much every time, but man, you make one mistake and you're pretty much dead as a good handful of it's attacks are insta-death, on top of the fact there's no checkpoint between the two phases and it just becomes annoying. I found everything else in the game really not that bad to do, I'd even call the game somewhat easy, but this boss is the one exception. The True Final Boss as Super Sonic is also really stingy with giving you Rings for no real reason, for what's otherwise an easy fight. Speaking of, that boss has incredible atmosphere and music - both of these fights do.

Oh yeah, the Battle Mode exists as well. It's a fun distraction but honestly the customization of your little Battle Mode bot is more fun than the mode itself, which is kind of sad if you think about it. Can't go wrong with playing it, though.
I didn't get to try out the Co-Op mode for too long, if you're wondering. Played about two Zones, but it's a nice way to bring a family member in for some Sonic fun.

All that being said, I'd say this game is really great. In a way, I'd say it's even better than Mania, despite how hot of a take that may seem. It really feels like the potential that Mania had was fully realised - like it's shackles were broken, in a sense, having all original zones and a brand new original plot instead of just relying as a tie-in for the most mediocre Sonic game I've ever played (Forces).
However, is it really worth the 60 dollars? Ehhh, not really. Even as the most biased Sonic fangirl to ever exist, I can admit the price is a bit much. Maybe buy this one on sale for like, 50 or even 40.
8.5/10. It's a really fun time!

This DLC alone made Security Breach as the complete package jump up to my top 3 in terms of official mainline FNaF games. I am deadass serious.

Ruin is a tightly designed, fun experience from beginning to end. And actually scary, too! Would ya believe it?
The atmosphere is dark, as is fitting for the scenario, and the new gameplay mechanics with the Security Mask and Faz-Wrench were quite fun, too. They lead to some, admittedly repetitive, but nevertheless still fun puzzles, that led to a rewarding gameplay loop through it's run time. Looking for collectables and such may sound like it'd be more tedious due to needing to look in the real and AR worlds with the Mask, but it's honestly not so bad, considering the more linear design of Ruin, and thankfully the game tells you when you've gotten all collectables in an area anyway.
In terms of scrapped content, Monty Golf Part 2 and Chica's Feeding Frenzy were added back in too. So that's nice. Not much to say there, really. Game was just fun, and was spooky. Overall, a step up from Security Breach, even if I did still enjoy that game's gameplay loop, despite being very flawed.

Alright, with the most important aspect of the game out of the way - the gameplay - it's time to discuss the story real quick.
I won't go too deep into this because of spoilers, but I'll just say this game made me shed a tear, "ooo" from the beauty of an area, scream from excitement, and then made me excited again, in the antecipation to what I knew I was going to find only a few minutes later. All within the same 10-15 minutes or so of gameplay. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane. It's an enjoyable story for what it is, and Cassie is a great protagonist for what it's worth.

Ruin honestly just proves to me that the more Sci-Fi approach that FNaF has been going with recently can still work, can still deliver the fear at times, and can still be a great experience. A wonderful time all around, and I'm very excited for upcoming games that hopefully go in this same direction.
8/10

pretty good game! one of the better fnaf games overall. of course, it's best enjoyed how it was originally designed (with VR), but Flat Mode works just fine and is plenty enjoyable too, shown by the fact i do not have VR and still really liked the game.

if you're a fan of fnaf... let's be honest, you've already played this. if you're not a fan of fnaf and want to see what the fuss is about... play the first fnaf game, and THEN come back and play this one.
