In J.D Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is a character deeply tied to his past. He yearns for his childhood back, but is continually unable to come close to it. While he may return to people or places that contain some remnants of his past, he will never fully be able to return to it.

Phoebe is the kind of person Holden enjoys being with simply because of her innocence, part of which is the fact that she acts genuinely. She is able to keep up with him mentally in a similar way that Allie did, and she physically reminds him of Allie, as Holden says, “She has this sort of red hair, a little bit like Allie’s was…” (67). Phoebe, in a similar way to Allie, represents the ideal person to Holden: one who hasn’t lost their innocence and doesn’t pretend to be someone they’re not.

Holden’s younger sister Phoebe is also symbolic of his ideal life and the lifestyle he wants to return to. Phoebe is very innocent yet smart, creative, and genuine. She is reminiscent of Allie in the way that Holden describes her, which is another reason Holden likes her. He does seem to like Phoebe for who she is though mostly because of how smart she is. Holden mentions it multiple times, but his most concise thought about this is, “You never saw a little kid so pretty and smart in your whole life” (67).

As a younger child, Holden would often visit New York’s Museum of Natural History with his school; an important piece of symbolism in the book. The reason Holden is so comforted by the museum is summed up by none other than Holden himself, “The only thing that would be different would be you” (121). The museum is a constant in an outer world of variables; where Holden can age and change but always come back to the same museum with the same exhibits and the same environment to have a physical reminder of older times. “Certain things they should stay the way they are” (122). This also summarizes Holden’s outlook on life, and also implies that he fears change and the future and wants to stay in a more comfortable time that he knows.

Clearly, Holden is very attached to Allie, or at least enough to merit carrying it. After Allie’s death, Holden became very judgmental; holding everyone else to a higher, unrealistic standard based off how he remembers Allie. Midway through the book, Holden discusses an argument with an old classmate named Arthur Childs about religion, though Holden is unconsciously arguing as if Allie is Jesus, he is Judas, and everyone else are the Disciples. “I [Holden] said I’d bet a thousand bucks that Jesus never sent old Judas to Hell” (100). He states that the Disciples would, saying that Allie understood Holden and wouldn’t blame him for how he is now, but everyone else in the world seems to act like the Disciples and condemn Holden for his actions. Holden would be strikingly different if Allie was still alive, as Allie’s death showed Holden the cruelty of the real world, claiming his innocence.

Before he was exposed to the harsh outside world and lost his innocence, Holden had a younger brother Allie, who passed away due to leukemia. Despite being his younger brother, Allie became a role model for Holden; essentially his idea of a perfect person who was genuine, smart, and innocent. Allie’s death was a turning point in Holden’s life which showed him just how unfair the real world is. On the night of Allie’s death, Holden became exceptionally angry with the world in general, and went on to punch out all of his garage’s windows. This injured his hand which serves as a reminder for the rest of his life. In the beginning of the book, Holden is asked to write a composition for Stradlater, and he decides to write it about Allie’s old baseball mitt which Holden offhandedly reveals to mean a great deal to him in his narration when he mentions “I happened to have it in my suitcase” (39).

Jane rubs the tear into the checkerboard as Holden, sensing something wrong, sits down next to her and kisses her. In terms of symbolism, this action could represent the sadness that Jane is feeling as she realizes that she and Holden are maturing and that they may not play checkers together as they grow apart, with the checkerboard representing their childhood, and the tear being their innocence leaving them.
Apr 28, 2016 @ 3:58pm
Jane Gallagher was Holden’s childhood friend, who Holden repeatedly thinks of fondly. Obviously, Holden harbors some romantic feelings for Jane because he is probably attracted to her, but mostly because she is an important part of his past, which he romanticizes constantly. This attachment is very clearly displayed when Holden is in the hotel lobby and says, “All of a sudden … I got old Jane Gallagher on the brain again.” (Salinger 76). When Holden thinks of Jane this time, he remembers one of the last times he and Jane played checkers. Holden describes this as one of his only romantic encounters that begins as Holden recounts, “Then all of a sudden, this tear plopped down on the checkerboard,” (78).

Holden’s Past Relationships
Nostalgia is a very powerful feeling. While it may invoke the desire to return to older and more innocent times, society dictates that you must mature and let go of the past, rightly so. In J.D Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caulfield romanticizes his past and absolutely despises the world around him. Many objects and people are linked to his past, triggering his nostalgia, shown to the reader through anecdotes. Holden Caulfield’s past is symbolized by Jane Gallagher, Holden’s brother Allie, the natural history museum in New York City, and his sister Phoebe.

Lengthening the School Day

Should the school day be lengthened by two hours? No. Adding two hours to the school days has consequences. Some of these are less recreational time and increased stress.
First, increased school time means less time for recreational activities. There is even less time for activities if the student plays an instrument, plays sports, or any other after school activity. Also, a longer school day usually equals more homework. It may not sound like much, but two hours of extra school is a long time.
Second, extra school would cause increased stress for students. A longer school day usually means more homework. More homework means more stress. Too much homework and students will be overwhelmed and do worse on tests, which is the opposite of what MDUSD wants.
Longer school days have consequences such as less recreational time and increased stress. That is why the school day should not be lengthened by two hours.
