If you're a fan of Kyle Thompson's other games, you'll love this. Crypt Custodian is a solid improvement over Islets, which was one of the top metroidvanias of 2022. One of Islets' strengths for me was that its consistency. Progression through the game is consistent. The player is always taught before being tested and challenged. There's tons of player-friendly quality of life. If you get lost, there are systems to provide hints. There's bits and pieces of challenge for sure, but this isn't a game that offers much, if any frustration. Accessibility is taken seriously. The game design is just very solid.

Crypt Custodian is more of the same in the best way possible. The music and artwork are fantastic. The gameplay is smooth, fair, and fun. There's always challenges or friendly characters around every corner, which goes a long way to keeping things feeling varied. The perspective change from 2D to top-down works really well, and the addition of photo collectables is a fantastic idea to flesh out character backstories. It helps that the characters are adorable and your main quest is to befriend them. Love that.

2024 has had some insanely good metroidvania releases and Crypt Custodian is absolutely amongst the best of them.

Really fun, solid title overall. There's definitely some flaws, but the developers have been extremely responsive providing post-launch support, and the game more than makes up for its weaknesses in other ways. If the idea of pogoing around the screen, darting from enemy to enemy sounds like a chore to you, avoid this game. If you're like me and that sounds amazing, give the game a shot.

Offers a more enjoyable and challenging casual playthrough than Hollow Knight, although it doesn't have the same replayability. Incredible game, one of the absolute best metroidvanias, even though it's a little light on metroidvania elements. 9/10.

Incredible metroidvania for people who enjoy creative movement challenges, but the combat is a ton of fun too. What really surprised me was how fun and interesting the story and characters were.

The free content update is also a huge improvement on the game! Shoutouts to the devs for continuing to show the game such amazing support.

Plagiarism of Slay the Spire: no polish, awful, sexualized garbage. Has League of Legends characters for no reason.

One of the worst tower defense games I've played. Very glitchy, lacks tutorials, horrible grating sound effects and music, unoriginal, boring.

Horrible copy of Merchant which re-uses assets from other "Royal" games.

I'd support this dev if the game were offered for free, but trying to sell this game based on the false premise of having "well-designed dungeons", "many kinds of interesting [...] weapons", and "various enemies and traps" is deceptive. The game doesn't really have much variety, and the level design is pretty rough.
