sell your backgrounds or emoticons to get some gems

you could cash in your trading cards for gems also but i would advise against doing that

Worst deal ever! Only advisable if you are in a country with no access to the community market.

A digital good, as cards, emotes and backgrounds. But the market value of a sack of gems is kind of stable, so it result in a Steam currency.

Steam allows to create a Booster Pack using gems, so you get three more cards to complete your set. However you need from 450 to 1200 gems to do that, and you get from 1 to 30 gems with your cards, so the math make this a very bad deal.

Most of traders accept gems as a coin, so you can balance a trade that otherwise would be rejected.

To get them, buy a sack at the Community Market, or turn all your .03 u$s bg and emotes. For other items do the math. 10 gems = .01 u$s nowadays.
Example:
:csgox: -> 100 gems -> .10 u$s. In this case you get more turning into gems than selling it.
:approve: -> 10 gems -> .43 u$s. Turning this emote in gems would be stupid.

Hope that helps.
