But if you are going to try and trade instead of using market then for the most part you are going to get a lot less. Anyone looking for a foil to craft is usually just going to buy it from the market, somone looking to trade for one is usually just looking to get it cheap to sell or trade for profit.
Market is a lot cheaper for foils than it use to be but it's still more that you are going to get from trading with someone who is just looking to profit. Unless you do find somone offering a good deal (very unlikely) the market is the way to go with foils.
I do agree though if you are in no hurry, it would be best to wait until things die down after the sale. Eventually they should go up a little more, but foil prices will never be what they use to be.
The market isn't a joke to check value. What is the value of a digital good? A digital good, by the way, that are ridiculously common. When searching for a card and finding 10,000 people selling it, you get a pretty good idea of how common these are. For every 10,000 people selling there are probably another few thousand who have one and don't care for the trading card aspect.
What is the benefit of a higher level? A few more friends on your friends list and every 10th level you get a new showcase.. and an increased chance at booster packs. If you don't like the trading card aspect, you may not care about the rewards. The point is the 'value' of the cards is whatever people are willing to pay. Same with the housing market. The market value is whatever the market will bear.
The summer sale cards will continue to increase in value since the set will be discontinued. But the other cards will continue to enter the market as the games are purchased, played and cards earned. I can see the value increasing a little as the initial flood of cards slows, but I don't think these "pretend" cards are going to stay a hot item unless Steam provides more incentive that more friends and showcases for our profiles. Just my 2 cents.
