Steam made some changes lately that have really messed with the frequency that you can check inventory or offer trades. It's been causing lots of issues for traders and trading bots / websites. For instance, STM is almost useless now because of this - all sorts of issues with refreshing inventories and being able to scan for duplicates.
I had to wait 8 hours yesterday lol
Hopefully they engineer a proper solution in the next month. Because I can already see the deluge of complaints they're going to get when the Winter Sale arrives and the trading in sale cards starts. Seasonal sales are usually my busiest trading period and always seems to result in 10 times the volume of traders in this forum.
I'm beginning to subscribe to the "tinfoil hat" theory that Steam is actually TRYING to kill peer-to-peer trading. Then they can force users into the Marketplace so they can get their couple of pennies per trade...
Yeah, I think Steam is definitely trying to limit trading, but I'm not sure of their motives. I don't think that they're trying to force people to the market though, because they also limit the market. If you use the market enough, you'll be locked out for hours as well.
Compounding that frustration is the lack of effort or support that Valve seems to put into making these activities easier through the Steam client. The only upgrade I've seen in the last 5 years is the "Craft n badges" button on the badge page, and the only reason that probably made the cut is that it reduces the number of client/server interactions.
Then you add in this lame attempt to reduce traffic by rate-limiting everyone, with an easily bypassable (for most people) IP-block, and it seems to place the blame squarely on everyone who trades cards here. Whoever thought that was an appropriate solution should probably be fired.
If Valve wants to limit my Steam Community experience while continuing to rake in Steam Market fees to pay for the OPEX of supporting the same, I'm seriously considering:
1) Cancelling all of my buy and sell orders on the Steam Market -and-
2) Starting to play through the backlog of free games I have accumulated on Epic and GOG until this situation improves
I've been patient with this hoping it will go away, but that patience will probably disappear once the new year arrives.
Moderating and community team, if you are reading this please forward to the relevant teams so that there's a chance for this to be corrected. The new IP rating limits are very strict.
Like many of you, I had fun trading on steam. Shame.
