You can also use the actual Kinect v1 or v2 with Steam Machines and Linux PCs as well:

Yep you better off using an actual Kinect, but good luck finding games to play with that on PC. Sadly, the driver is currently not included in SteamOS so you will have to install it yourself. As a side note, SteamOS should have WiiMote support and I wonder if we will see games using that controller on PC because of that.

I thought OpenKinect was a libusb based library so it needs no driver in steamos.
It would help if steam helped with device multiplexing. But if you just start a game, why shouldn't the game be allowed to access your kinect?

You might be true, I'm not entirely sure, I don't have a Kinect to test, my understanding was that you needed a freenect library and I didn't find any package of that name on SteamOS repositories.

I'm looking into how to go about using as a Wiimote for Dolphin and other nonsteam games I own like GTAV and Witcher3. Anyone have any ideas on that?

It seems currently locked to big picture crap.

Pure speculation based on the videos shared but; I don't think you would be better off using the kinect. This product is a small computer itself. So I assume the camera does a lot of the processing internally before it sends the data to the computer? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the kinect has a quad-core processor in it? The kinect probably could be useful if more support was put into it. I have messed around with kinect on my PC and it seems to take a lot of work to get it going. It needed some keen configuring. (that is probably because I was using it for applications that don't support it.)
