Linus Torvalds: Why is Linux not competitive on desktop? until now
I just wanted to point out a few things Linus Torvalds the main creater of Linux, said he started Linux, as a Desktop OS, and, Linus also points out part of why Linux is not a competitive OS for Desktops, until Now the Steam OS will soon be on Desktops Like no other and, the Steam OS is so competitive for the PC gaming and, Console's it has made Sony and, Microsoft worry some so i ask you is Steam OS, what Linus has been waiting for? to rule the Desktops?

As far as I'm aware, SteamOS is aimed at the living-room/console market not the desktops. There's no doubt that Valve's push for more games to support Linux will help increase the adoption of Linux on the Desktop.

as N30N said, i dont think the SteamOS will change linux's place on desktops, however if SteamOS is successful then the high end games being developed for Linux would effect how popular linux itself is on desktops.

Me as a developer and a gamer will be torn. I rely heavily on windows and windows apps for my work, not because there are no good alternatives, i just dont have the time to learn them and incorporate them into my workflow. However games being available on linux is a big step, and if app support follows you can bet i will.

Yes SteamOS is aimed at the living room but many users will turn it into a desktop

It doesn't come pre installed. It's as simple as that.
Linux is doing fine by way of Android, Chrome OS and embedded gadgets like Roku, because you can buy those in stores.

Most PC users can't even reinstall windows. When it craps out, they buy a new computer. Expecting them to install an OS is not going to happen.

Of course the SteamMachines will be the first promoted mass market Linux PC's. Sure Dell and Hp have offered a machine or 2 that came with Linux pre-installed. But you had to know it was available to even find it.

Yeah, Dell has been pretty half hearted about it in the US. Apparently elsewhere in the world, it's different.

Dell as I know in most countries only sell PC online not in store that where they failled. Actually 95% at least of the average user buy computers (PC and Mac) at there local store.

till there are not Linux pre-installed computers in store Linux Desktop market will never grow up and that also need some companies that will be specialised in Linux support and tech service.
