Me as a developer and a gamer will be torn. I rely heavily on windows and windows apps for my work, not because there are no good alternatives, i just dont have the time to learn them and incorporate them into my workflow. However games being available on linux is a big step, and if app support follows you can bet i will.
Yes SteamOS is aimed at the living room but many users will turn it into a desktop
Linux has Ok app support as is and i see many Steam OS fork's coming LOL that will have full desktops etc but i see Steam OS being used as a desktop by many users but only time will tell
Linux is doing fine by way of Android, Chrome OS and embedded gadgets like Roku, because you can buy those in stores.
Most PC users can't even reinstall windows. When it craps out, they buy a new computer. Expecting them to install an OS is not going to happen.
Of course the SteamMachines will be the first promoted mass market Linux PC's. Sure Dell and Hp have offered a machine or 2 that came with Linux pre-installed. But you had to know it was available to even find it.
Yeah, Dell has been pretty half hearted about it in the US. Apparently elsewhere in the world, it's different.
till there are not Linux pre-installed computers in store Linux Desktop market will never grow up and that also need some companies that will be specialised in Linux support and tech service.
