Will SteamOS run open office?
I know it sounds like a stupid thing to ask, but think about it, will SteamOS be a real OS or just big picture without windows running on the back? Will SteamOS allow us to code and compile programs in it or will it be an application you have to restart your pc to use? Will it allow us to install games with linux support even if they are not on steam?

Think of it, because i believe that those will be the questions that, when answered, will tell us if we're gonna keep windows (after old windows game compatibility is worked out) installed in another partition as well as another linux distro, or not.

TL;DR
Will SteamOS be a full OS or just steam without a conventional OS supporting it?

It's only logical that you would be able to run whatever you want. THe OS is fully customizable, and they want developers to use SteamOS to develop with as well. Not to mention, they want people to use it on their PC. No one will want to dual boot just to play games on SteamOS, then work on their other OSes.
Yes ok... they also already announced that the os can be used as a normal Linux distro if the user wants to do that, but i'm not sure if this will be enough simple to look easy also for an unexperienced user

I hope they do simplify it for the average user. I've been using linux for about a year so I would be able to, but Valve should make it as simple as installing/uninstalling an app.

They will, i'm sure ^^

Well some like myself believe it's not worth it to dualboot if you just want to use a small application like Libreoffice Writer just to do some dreaded homework!
the_blur 2013 年 10 月 4 日 下午 12:57
Like the Beeb said, this is only logical, Gabe said you could start up a browser, I can't see this not being super hackable, as long as you can get a console window open, you could install whatever. Now typing your TPS reports in with the steam controller...maybe not as awesome (and don't forget the covers, they always forget the covers...). =)

Yeah, you should generally be able to run any kind of linux binary on it, I would assume. Now what'd blow my mind is if it included some sort of Win32 kernel or emulator. :D

I think that due to the aspect of Steam that now allows people to buy programs, it seems only likely that they would allow people to do this kind of thing.
Buy? who talked about "buying"? OpenOffice is Free! ^^

P.S.: I suggest you to try out LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice.

Anyway... the right answer is "Probably".
Since SteamOS il Linux-Based, it should theorically be able to run any program wich runs on Linux... but is it designed to do that? will this be possible in an easy way and without hacking somewhere?

I think problably yes, since a lot of people here are viewing StramOS as a true pc OS and usually Valve listens a lot user feedback. but we maybe just didn't got the point of what Valve wants to do.

I think we need some more informations from Valve.

You need to improve your reading skills. He meant that since Valve sells software through Steam already, it wouldn't be so farfetched that it allowed other software to run rather than just games.

In my opinion, given that it's linux-based, if it doesn't run it with the off-the-shelf configuration, it should be pretty easy for someone with the knowhow to install the requisite runtimes to run OpenOffice. I don't see the need though. SteamOS is targeted at 10 foot UIs, if you want to run Steam over Linux on a desktop, just use a regular distribution and install Steam on it.

It here there's someone who should learn to read better, thet's you.
You compleatley missed the point. i was not talking about the software wich can be alredy be sold on Steam, but all the free software you can find in quite any Linux distribution.

As you said, "someone with the knowhow". It shouldn't be so hard, but remember that SteamOS should fit for unexperienced users.

If it isn't run natively, than you probably could install it on your own. After all, SteamOS doesn't put restrictions on what can and can't be run.

I can't see why SteamOS won't run anything that is out for the various versions of Linux. The only real issue, I'm thinking is the package it uses. The window manager can be changed at login or in a different terminal, so that won't pose any problems.

I kinda wonder if it will look a little like MythTV or Sugar in it's presentation, something that doesn't have the traditional windowing widgets, something that has a specific focus.

I have to say, I'm very excited!

It should be quiet easy to launch a full traditional desktop in SteamOS with access to all the Debian/Ubuntu packages. I know I'll be doing exactly this.

Here's what I think:
SteamOS will run Steam & games and not much more. Modding it into a desktop system will be possible, but it would be more work than just installing Ubuntu and Steam.

Valve could single handedly shake up the Windows Market Share if they allow LibreOffiec or OpenOffie to work on Steam Os.

Could be very interesting......

However guys....this is FAR FAR OFF. because...remmeber, that majority of games only work on Windows..... which means....that yoiu need a windows computer, to stream the WindowsOnly games to your SteamOs box.....

i dont know if Steam os gets a software layer like ubuntu then yeah problable.
