[Resolved] ASUS Xonar Essence STX Sound Card is not detected on Steam OS

Hello All,

Are there any ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card's running into same problem as i do on steam os ? Anyone know the workaround for this issue ?

Have you selected the correct sound output?
I use a Xonar DGX, and on Ubuntu I get about four or so different sound output selections as well as the on-board sound. Unlike in Windows, where only two outputs appear and the normal speaker output is selected by default. When I first installed Ubuntu, I had to perform speaker tests on each output to find the right one(the speaker output was actually labeled as "Headphones 2").
(just trying to cover a basic problem, this may not be your issue but even people who are great with computers can overlook things)

The card should work fine on Linux (run "cat /proc/asound/cards" to see if the list includes something like "1 [STX ]: AV200 - Xonar STX", if yes, then the ALSA driver has been loaded). The most likely problem is that SteamOS is simply not using it as the default device, and tries to output audio via HDMI instead.

I have the exact same card and its working, just go to desktop, find sound settings and change to correct device

Lucky you, there was a Steam beta update right now:

SteamOS
- A sound output device is chosen on first startup, preferring HDMI. You can change the selected device using the Audio option under settings.

I don't see my Xonar Essense STX listed under Sounds Settings. In the list, there are only these following sound devices:
- HDMI Digital output ( this came from my R9 270x & my LG 23", both connected by a HDMI cable).
- Corsair Vengeance 1500 ( my USB Headset. It's connected to my rig )
- CM88 somthing something ( this is probably represent my motherboard's sound chip )

On my Ubuntu 13.04, my Xonar Essense STX sound device is detected & listed under Sounds Setting, it works fine but not in steam os :(

Hello All, Thanks for responding my distress posts. I'd like to inform you that i have resolved the issue. You were right, i just need to select the option labeled as "CMI88 Audio " in the sound setting dialog and it just works well now. Once again, thank you.

CMI8788 is actually the PCI audio processor chip on your card that ASUS has renamed to AV200.

I can see my soundcard but there's no sound upon choosing it. (d2x)

Check if it is actually used as the audio output device, and the mixer settings are correct (not muted or zero volume, etc.).

Also, speaker output may be listed as headphones output, as I stated above.

I tripple checked everything. When I choose CMI8788 I get tons of options like, analog 5.1 + digital input. I've tried every single one and none of them works. Also I am unable to choose output. In desktop mode its the same story, none of the options works.
In alsamixer everything is unmuted.
Booting my daily drive with ubuntu 12.04 everything works fine and dandy.

Is it possible to not use pulse-audio? I'd much rather just use alsa.

Do you plug your speaker's cable to Xonar's Digital/SPDIF output plug or the analog plug ? If you are sure that you have plug the cable into the SPDIF output, click the "Output" tab, ensure that CMI8788 is selected as well and the output volume's check box is ticked and its slider bar is moved to 100% or higher. Then try test the audio output (click the "Test" button next to that profile option )

No, I only use the analog outputs. The pictures was only for reference.
I've tried every single one both in steamos settings and in desktop mode settings and there's absolutely no sound.

I've been trying to get alsa to work but shutting off pulse causes freezing.
