Steam Controller: D-pad convert to buttons
Hey, I got the steam controller today. I'm definitely liking it and I feel like they did a great job with the track pad giving the feel of a mouse. The only thing I've been having issue with is trying to make the d pad up, down, left, right read as different keyboard letter keys instead of arrow keys. I went into the configuration menu and I changed “style of pad” for the d-pad to be a button menu instead, then I mapped out the buttons to correspond with F,G,H and T, just for testing. I tried this out with a couple games, but when into the games' key mapping menu the game still read the d-pad buttons as up, down, left, right. I also don't understand what the “requires click” option means when you change the “style of pad”. Has anybody been able to successfully map the d-pad?

I didn't try keys but I did rebind mine to use A/B/X/Y buttons (like the xbox controller since the buttons felt so odd where they are). The requires click means you actually have to press the bututon down far enough that it actually clicks rather than just tapping the surface of the trackpad.

Some game can consider it as a conflict. Like using both mouth and gamepad still weird. And i think it works for some games and not for some others.

Try setting it as a directional pad and then changing the bound keys from up/down/left/right to whatever you want them to be.

Also, quick questions, but A) is this a game you got from Steam, or a non-Steam game? And B) are you launching it from BPM or desktop UI? It sounds like what's happening is it's reverting back to the default keyboard/mouse system bindings, instead of what you're configuring. And while there are a few games on Steam that do this, most games that have had this problem have been non-Steam games that just don't work with the Steam overlay.

I should mention a C) make sure you don't have overlay turned off in Steam's settings...

Uninstalling and reinstalling Steam fixed the issue.
