PS3 into a steam machine nowadays?
I've heard that there ways to turn my old ps3 into a steam machine by configuring the operating system before, but as the firmware has progressed I can't find a current way to do it. Is there any way, in the world of 2016, that I can still turn a ps3 into a steam machine?

It's not possible. Even if you end up installing Linux to a PS3, the console does not use a x86 processor and, thus, neither Steam nor PC games could run on it.

No, you can't.

This question gets asked in here once every few months or so. Your best bet would be something like this

Well technically it is possible. If you have an ancient PS3 firmware that still has the Other OS feature (most likely you won't), you could install an PS3 compatible PowerPC Linux distribution then install QEMU and Windows XP in the x86 processor emulator.

The performance will be extremely slow, though. It would essentially be like trying to run Windows XP on a 486 DX computer but steam could technically be installed and you might be able to play some very basic 16-bit style indie PC games at 640x480 or 800x600. Windows Vista and 7 is probably possible as well but far too slow to be useful.

Hey, OP, got a spare PS4 lying around?

With a proper exploit in the wild, homebrew group fail0verflow took on the challenge of installing a full version of Linux on the system. It achieved its goal this week...

By the way, I'm absolutely stunned people want to run any piece of software which is totally not designed on the hardware.
Why ? What benefit vs. building a proper X86 system that will run 10X times faster ?

That's pretty awesome. I wonder if the Linux boot hack supports modern PS4 firmware, though?

Yeah, really awesome. A little slow but cool nonetheless. I doubt he's using an SSD in there, and if he isn't, would be nice to see load times with one
I have no idea, but if it does, it wouldn't surprise me if Sony put the kibosh on this real quick
