I've done a few remixes and tend to find artists who have all the samples available ready to remix. These can be found on their websites or even on their CD's. Also search google for remix competitions as these normally have the samples available.
The only time I've remixed a song from scratch is to use a program like Reason or FruityLoops to recreate the original parts from scratch, but this is very time consuming.
I have never tried to get sample parts from an actual track, as you say its too messy.
Hope this helps.
Some of my OFFICIAl REMIXES include:
"Sandstorm" by Darude (Samples sent to me by Darude for a competition)
"Bass How Low Can You Go" by Simon Harris (Samples sent to me by Simon)
"Sunlight" by DJ Sammy (Samples supplied in an eJay Remix demo competition)
"Shout (Tears for Fears)" by Sagitaire (Samples supplied via a Competition on Sagitaire website)
Are stems and samples the same thing??
