Happy new year folks!

So since the old Steam UI isn't going anywhere seemingly, we managed to fix these two issues.

Now the images will be automatically resized so they don't bug out like they used to. Otherwise from what I tested so far seems to work okay!

Only issue is that when you open existing skins the logo position can sometimes be off, or even off-screen. It doesn't affect the skin, as if you download it will be where you saw it on the thumbnail, we'll be fixing that too shortly.

Howdy folks

Nothing new to report, currently more advanced skinning is unavailable without disabling steam file verification which is kinda iffy.

But on another note we decided that we will start streamlining the service so that we don't need to pay so much to host it (out of our own pockets, mind you )

Starting October 1st 2020


This is a one-time purge, as we have a lot of test and unlisted skins made by users who were just playing around with the site. Skins that have at least 1 star or were made after October 2019 will be left alone.

If you made a skin a long time ago that you'd like to keep, you can simply log on and "edit" your skin a little bit, so that it's saved. Otherwise just download the rmskin file.

Skins made by people who donated to the site will also be left alone.

Alright so let's talk about the elephant in the room

We know Valve has been messing with skinning for a while now, and today it seems that the new steam library UI is no longer beta. All summer long and in autumn we've been looking for ways to skin that new stuff - should be easy right? It's just CSS / HTML. Way easier than the old steam skin format at least.

THE PROBLEM

These files sit outside of the skins folder, meaning they are bound by verification each time steam launches. So any changes we could make to those files to accommodate skins would be wiped quickly.

There are some hacks to go around this with memory injection, but honestly we believe it's VAC-ban territory and isn't a particularly sexy solution.

WHAT CAN YOU DO

You can always bug Valve to get them to re-introduce skinning support for the Steam library, if these CSS/HTML files can be packaged along with skins, then it wouldnt be difficult to re-vive support for most Steam skins that have been neutered by this update.

WHAT WE DID

At this time we removed the non-editable features from SteamCustomizer, it's still possible to skin the client frame but I agree with you it's not what it used to be. We patched the tool to apply skins correctly too.

Alright folks it's time to talk about the elephant in the room

Steam has released a new design for the Friends list which may have affected how SteamCustomizer skins looked if you downloaded them prior to the update.

Here's what you can do:

Redownload and re-apply your skins from the website

This should fix issues with the layout as the skinning engine will "build" the skin based on new Steam files. You can even locate your *.stskin files and just open them again.

You can also disable the custom skin from View > Settings > Interface - selecting < default skin > or from Skin Manager (in your startmenu)

Meanwhile, as far as supporting the friends list skinning, we're not sure yet as Valve still seems to be developing it and it's not finished.

We hope that eventually it will be possible to skin the Friends list, in the meantime that's not possible. Additionaly, we will be closely observing Valve's developement of the theorized new client UI and try to modify SteamCustomizer to support it.

Good evening, it's 23:26 here in Britain and hurricane Matt is just off the coast of Florida.

Now we don't post often... we've been quite busy maintaining the service (and our fragile lives) and would like to thank everyone participating! In this brief time that SteamCustomizer existed, there have been 140K users and 60K skins. In fact, there are more Skins created on the site in 2 hours than in all of history before the arrival of this service!

Now all these wonderful skins being submitted, there wasn't really a way to see them. Until now.

==== What's next?

Now that we got the hardest bit done - we'll start to work on the Editors immediately. That's right, Editors. We intend to add more types of Skins you can customize and expand the options of the default one as much as we can.

We received a lot of feedback from our users and we've carefully considered every idea.
Over the course of the next few months, we'll update the editor and allow more freedom in customization. At the same time, we're hoping to update the Skin Manager as it is already quite primitive by our standards :)

==== Community Activities

As a part of our launch, we might be holding a Skin Contest quite soon. But first, we need to make sure our server doesn't crash from the new features.

==== Why the ads?

Some of you might be wondering - well, the internet is full of ads, and now these guys are doing it. Great. To answer that - it costs a lot of money to host this service. It's been hosted from our own (and also some other kids') lunch money for over half a year now. It's not sustainable for us to keep paying it, so we're hoping that you won't use Adblock and allow this website to continue, well, existing. We didn't expect there to be so many users and so many skins this quickly, our resource utilization is through the roof

Later we might introduce some options that will allow you to disable ads.
