A more detailed description would be nice :) We had the same problem last night. Maybe we can find commonalities to find a solution.
What we want to do:
-voicechat over skype
-stream only audio and video of the game with Steam broadcasting (if possible without delays)
I started a Stream and my friend tried to watch me. At the same time we had a talk over skype.
My friend got a strong acoustic feedback. He heard his voice five or 6 times.
My Broadcast Settings:
Video: 720p
Bitrate: 1000kbits/s
Record my Desktop ... unchecked
Record and broadcast my microphone ... unchecked
show stat uploads ... unchecked
It is strange that Steam potentially broadcasts my microphone with having the option "Record and broadcast my microphone" unchecked. We also tried to set "push to talk", without success.
But if i think about it, he only hear his own vioce multiple times but not mine. Maybe its a audio setting problem?
We deactivated all unnecessary audio devices... again without success.
This problem occours with Steam, skype works well.
We also tried the other direction. My friend started a stream and i tried to watch. Without acoustic problems. (connection was slow, but this sould be a matter of his bandwidth)

feel free to correct my english , i´ll do my best ;)
It doesn't matter if I broadcast or my friends, if we are on a skype call together we get skype auido on delay from the steam Broadcast.
Your friends mic is going through your sound device, and steam uses windows's default sound device for the broadcast. So it won't know if your friend has a mic on or not, because that microphone on/off setting is only for YOUR mic.
Only way to stop this from happening right now is to use a separate device for skype (like a tablet or phone).
However i've heard that peeps have been using a special virtual audio thing that can separate the games sound from all other sounds.
IMO it does not matter what is your (viewer) settings, the problem is windows audio mixer vs audio card driver on the source (broadcasting) computer. That is for windows OS, maybe Linux/Steam OS and Mac handle audio differently. Maybe other driver versions/audio card vendors will work without any problem, but I believe that in this state of development this steam feature is able to record and broadcast only final audio mix.
Just for info, I have Win7 64bit, Asus Xonar DX audio card with unofficial UNI Xonar driver (build 1821), my friend I was watching has W7 64b + Creative X-fi (? not sure if he bought something new). I plan to try opposite direction tomorrow to see if Asus broadcast better ;-)
Thx for your replies^^
Now I understand the source of this issue. It's as I suspected, a Problem of the system audio settings.
This happens when the broadcaster uses the system default audio output for Skype(or other voice chat). Because the broadcast will send all sounds that come through the default audio output. If you use another audio output, then the default for the voice chat, this issue should be solved.
If I think about that, its very logical. And thats the reason that the broadcast of my friend works well. He used different audio outputs: speakers for system and his headset for skype.
If I had spend 10minutes more in resaerch, I would have got the answer myself -_-
For me this Problem is solved. Thanks :)
I get your point, however I don't think its that simple ;-) even if you are correct... for example I would like to let my friend watch me play something, I have only my headphones and mic connected to audio card... So choosing any other output method (which can't work cause I have only 1 output device) would just mean I will not hear either the game or my friend. I believe most people use headphones and speakers separately...
So, I still believe it's connected to windows audio processing.....
Yup you´re right, but I think this is a special problem for users, who just have one audio output device (or just want to use only one). The same happens with the Steam voice chat, because is uses the default audio device.
At this beta state,(if im right) its impossible to use a voice chat parallel to the broadcast, with using only one audio device. (assume that there is no existing third-party software, which can create virtual audio devices)
Its time for a windows built-in function where you can map different applications to different audio outputs :)
Maybe its possible for Steam to implement a function to chose what applications are broadcasted. (independend from the audio device) I hope so. Or to implement a voice chat to the broadcast (additional to the text-chat) and the possibility to invite someone to the voice chat in the broadcast. Kinda like "Lets play together".
Yes, same situation here. Let us hope, that the Steam developers will read the feedback carefully and find a good solution for us.
Correct, but the problem persists with any 3rd party voice app. Steam causes the echo, even when using Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, Discord, etc.
I just found this post looking to solve the same problem and figured I would offer the workaround I found in case others were still looking, or in case newcomers find the post like I did.
