Performance hit from broadcasting???
so will this affect FPS like recording does? If im in the middle of a competitive match for a game and one of my friends decides to watch i really dont want to take any performance away. Is there a way to turn broadcasting off?

Apprently not. It still hooks into the game at startup, even when its "off", and it makes all my other capture programs audio stutter. So it's definately taking away performance that is for certain.

An option to completely turn it off (not just "off") would be good.

yea thats the option im looking for. Then again im really not even complaining since this was just released and is in beta. its an awesome idea.

they should make an option where you have to accept someone who requests to watch you play. maybe with a notification in the steam over-lay. and then have another "open broadcast" option that allows anyone to start watching at any time.

Yes, I have that option set right now. You can choose to invite people, have people request, have friends watch, or have anyone watch.

This is what I was worried about. I want a way to disable streaming COMPLETELY, so it doesn't impact the performance of the games I'm playing.

i would just opt out of the beta for now and wait till they implement these things

You can disable it "completely" by setting it to invites only in the broadcast options. From what I can tell, it does impact your game performance if your computer is not a decent enough that it can't run games well already.

No then it's just "off" and not off.

I have an older machine, and I have no idea when I'm going to be able to upgrade again, but it probably won't be for awhile. The games I have run well enough that I can enjoy them, but not so well that I can afford to take a performance hit for a feature I really have no interest in.

The bottom line is, I don't watch streams, I don't have any interest in streaming anything myself, and I'm not cool with the idea of having my experience negatively impacted because I can't turn this off. So I figure I ought to say something about that while this is still in beta, /before/ it's a done deal.

Try to disable Steam Overlay in settings, see if it helps. Just to check it.

There should be NO PERF HIT when appropriate options are used which apparently do not work currently. Look there's very few things that will drive me to use steam less but an "always on" feature that degrades in game performance? Yup. That will do it alright.

im sure they will add a setting to completely disable streaming in the future. for now i would opt out of the beta. Or if not, i bet if you are playing a SP game and just disconnect your internet the streaming will be completely disabled.

After doing a few tests, I found that there are no performance hits unless you are actively broadcasting.

The performance impacts from broadcasting also seem to differ from game to game. Fallout New Vegas, for instance, lost roughly 60 FPS while recording (80 to 15), while other games like Skyrim only lost 15 FPS.

Depends on the game you're playing, if its CPU dependent or not.. also if you're streaming you're actively encoding so you will see a slight performance hit. Of course if you have a slow laptop you shouldnt really be streaming but its an option readily available for users to use without having to make a streaming account, setting up programs and such. It has that potential in the sense that if they add subscription/donation with steam wallet integration and backed with steam community and custom emoji.. it could possibly outshine twitch.

Yep still need an option to turn it off completely. No game hooking, no nothing. OFF!
