Linux Broadcasting
So they've enabled the options pane for the Linux client, and attempting to watch a broadcast gets it encoding video along with the "Live" indicator in the corner, but the viewing box always shows "Waiting for _______'s stream to start". I've seen others have success in getting it to start, but it's no good here. Anyone have any info to track on this topic?

I am having the exact same problem trying to Broadcast from a system running Linux Mint 19.3, it says its Live, and it even shows the uploading speed, but the stream itself does not ever load for anyone.

I tried various suggestions like removing other game overlay software like ManguHUD or vkBasalt, power cycling my router, re-installing steam, different streaming options, but none of it has worked so far.

I contacted Steam support about this, but they basically told me to figure it out by myself.

I think at this point Steam itself is to blame for this, but I'll let you know if I ever get this work.

Oh really? I had assumed that Linux was just getting the optional feature neglect again. Perhaps there's hope for a fix this year.

Yes I just opened the discussion right after after yours, without reading it :D

Here is what it says in mine discussion, does it sound familiar?

Hey guys,

I have problem boradcasting to a friend of mine via steam broadcast. While my broadcast seems active (since it says this) and every setting is reduced to the minimum (eg. bitrate=750kbit/s and lowest resolution) the stream itself says "waiting for [user] to start the broadcast. The Loading screen doesnt change and the stream doesnt start.

On https://steamcommunity.com/broadcast/upload/ i says that my stream is active, so I think the problem is not on my side.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

In addition: we tried to switch positions, so he tried to stream while I watch. The same issue appears and I cant watch him gaming.

Thanks to all repliers in advance.

Best regards

Shep

Yeah I've noticed this as well. I tried having a friend view a broadcast, but they only see a black screen saying that broadcasting is not currently supported on my system, but I see options to enable it. Weird and sad. :Sadclot:

Worst part about this is that apparently it worked for about 1-2 months, then an update regressed the feature somehow. I want to say it has something to do with getting the stream out, as I see CPU usage jump about what you'd expect for software encoding, and there's a bitrate counter. Too bad the client is closed source or it would probably be fixed already.

I just get it to work for me, I can't seem to find any significant output from the console either. I'm getting the .bat error and

"Could not connect to X session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 authentication rejected
"

Anyone else?
Does it work on Linux, at all?

p.s. Had some things on another FS, shouldn't have done that it seems.

This is still broken! I have a similar problem: After starting the broadcast, it breaks after about one minute on ubuntu, but lasts a little longer on Arch (~5 minutes). When it breaks, for me it looks like it's still working, but it keeps "loading" forever to the user that's watching the gameplay.
I Installed ubuntu to reproduce the issue and open a support ticket on steam, but they answered me that they can't help and I should be talking about that on steam forums

Excellent. With the new beta this issue has resurfaced for me, and none of the old fixes seem to do anything!

Any news on this? Seems like broadcast is *still* broken.
Broadcasting does not work on any Linux distro that I am aware of, Valve doesn't support it on Linux at all. You can make it START broadcasting, but nobody can connect. TEsted many times with different times, internet setitings, regions, etc.. Sucks, but that's how it is. I have to use OBS and twitch every time I want to show a friend something...

I wish the Steam app would handle it, but I have to use OBS to stream to Steam broadcast instead. It works but its just annoying.
