Yes. In NMS, your freighter is a mobile base and ship hangar, which can have up to 30 frigate sized ships as an escort (and passive income, via expeditions) fleet. The player can also hire up to four fighter pilots as personal escorts in battle. You can also land on the frigates (most of them, anyway - the Mass Effect Normandy doesn't have a landing pad, nor do the organic frigates.)

I personally use my freighter as my "main" base of operations, and only set up smaller planetary bases for farming specific gases or plants.

There is an option to manage a settlement and that also generates some income and encounters. So, when I am in a grind mode, it is freighter, space stations, settlement, and then back to the ship for a save game.
