Can join/teleport to empire of somebody by invite in any moment after start, so your starting position will not be a problem.
I think a lot of new players will want to start in cooperative way.
And create tribal set of primitive buildings in that in-game modelling designer at last.
The new Gen4 creatures are unfinished, so the classic Gen3 creatures are recommended. Once Gen4 creatures are done, you can upgrade your avatar to a Gen4 creature.
The wiki has a lot of information and is up-to-date. The newbie guides might be a good read even if you have played way back in the older universes.
