BAD LATENCY / PING

Hi!

Latency issues can be caused by various factors. Because the internet is a complex system of connections, asymmetric routing (where traffic does not return by the same path it originated from) can cause latency issues.

From time to time, there may also be undersea cable maintenance projects which may cause traffic to be rerouted through a different link, resulting in an increase in latency.

There are two types of suboptimal routing: inbound and outbound. It is difficult to influence inbound routing where latency issues are caused by it because these can typically only be changed by your ISP. However, where the issue exists on our ISP's end (outbound), we can help with that.

BEFORE REPORTING AN ISSUE, ENSURE THAT THE ISSUE DOES NOT STEM WITHIN YOUR OWN LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN). For instance, if you are playing on a wireless connection, ensure that the wireless connection isn't causing the issue. This can be done in a multitude of ways, the simplest being to do a continuous ping to your router's IP address. This can be done on Windows using "ping -t xxx" where xxx is the internal address of your router.

If you are confident that the issue doesn't stem from your local network, please start a new discussion and provide the following information when facing issues:

1) What ISP are you connected to?

2) What country are you located in?

3) What Autonomous System Number are you connected to? (Provide the information provided in the page here[www.whatismyasn.org].

4) What is the output of your traceroute to 103.241.61.1? This traceroute can be done in the following ways:
- Windows: Open the Command Prompt and type in "tracert 103.241.61.1"
- Linux/OS X: Open the Terminal and type in "traceroute 103.241.61.1"

5) What is the IP range your IP is located in? You do NOT need to provide your full IP, just provide the range your IP is in. This can be done by going to http://bgp.he.net/ , and copy the "Announced as xxx (xxx Telecom)" section. For instance, if my IP were in the 103.241.61.1 range, my IP range as provided by the site would be "Announced as 103.241.61.0/24 (33 Ubi Avenue 3)". If you see multiple announcements, take the one with the higher prefix (i.e. if you see an announcement for 103.241.61.0/23 and 103.241.61.0/24, take the /24 as that is larger.
6) What are the timing(s) in which you encounter the issue?

Without this information, it will be difficult to determine where the issue stems. If the issue does not lie with our ISP, we can still provide advice on how to get it resolved with your ISP.

We have a VPN that you can use that may help to alleviate these connectivity issues as well, with it being on a different network. For information on this, please talk to topper to gain access :)

I posted the other day that the submarine line from Australia is down, once they get it up we should be okay, but for now, it is Kaputt. Not sure what the status is like now. You can read about it here. From Perth to Singapore.
