Hapis Island
In the early days of Rust (what became known as Rust Legacy) there was only one map, until the switch to the Experimental version in October 2014 which used randomly generated "procedural" maps. Players frequently got lost on the random maps - some felt nostalgic for the Legacy map, which featured a memorable road loop that they were familiar with.

Hapis Island is described as a "hand made" or "custom" map, which Facepunch released on 30th April 2015, featuring a similar "ring road" to the Legacy map; players have given distinct areas similar names to the ones given to areas of the Legacy map, such as Ecko Valley. Facepunch noted that it was "inspired by the original Rust Legacy map".

More roads have since been added to the design - Facepunch updated the map, and there were also "community made" versions. On 6th May 2021, the official version of the map had to be fixed so that it was compatible with the latest version of the game which had "updated visuals", and some work was done adding the new monuments to it. The official version returned on 20th May 2022, but Facepunch planned to "permanently retire" it in Feb 2024, and announced a "map maker competition".

Servers
Little research has been done on the servers that ran the map. Some of these servers were hosted in EU, and others were US.

Rustafied ran a Hapis server from around July 2015 to 2023. In 2019, it was a 150 slot server that appeared to be popular as their VIP option for it was sold out. It wiped on a bi-weekly schuedle:

There was a reddit Hapis server in 2018. Some Facepunch servers ran Hapis from atleast 2019 until Feb 2024. Rusty Moose ran a server for Hapis from around 2018 to August 2024.

Popularity
Severs that ran the map had "decent server populations" until atleast 2020. By October 2024, only around 1 in 1,000 servers show up on the in-game browser under the "Hapis" search term, and the servers were mostly empty.

Name
There have been several suggestions on meaning of Hapis, including the Turkish translation for prison.

Features
Interesting features in some version of Hapis that aren't seen on randomly generated maps are the set of islands, rock formations in the shape of an arch, and a waterfall (with some versions including a cave behind the waterfall). One similarity with random maps though is that the spawn points on Hapis are on the beaches. The spawn points in the Legacy map were slightly further inland.
