It's different because it mimics the actual pacenote style that Richard Burns and Robert Reid used when rallying. If you look up an onboard video of Richard Burns rallying you'll be able to hear very similar (but more detailed) pacenotes to what are spoken in game. The way they're implemented in game, they're very easily equated to a 6-1 numbering system.

Flat Left = 6 Left
Easy Left = 5 Left
Fast Left = 4 Left
Medium Left = 3 Left
K Left = 2 Left
90 Left = 1 Left

EDIT: FYI, Nicky Grist and Phil Mills are easy examples of world champion class co-drivers that gave the style of pacenotes you're more familiar with. The style and the notes are dictated by the driver however, not the co-driver.

That said, these can easily be replaced, and I'd actually recommend it for one big reason - there is a lot of time gap at the start and end of these original audio files that can make it very difficult for your co-driver to say multiple pacenotes very quickly, this means that at the highest level when you're going faster than the game even expects, your co-driver will really struggle to keep up. There is a mod kicking around from quite some time ago that replaces the "descriptive" callouts with audio edited versions of the same lines to create new "numbered" callouts from the original audio, but I'd instead recommend the complete pacenote replacement by Porridge that was made from actual onboard audio (without noise), which allows you to choose from Robert Reid, Phill Mills, and Nicky Grist.

Extreme understeer whatever the configuration
First of all, is this on Tarmac? RBR's Tarmac physics are very stiff and very understeer heavy, that's just kind of how it is, and while it feels great at high speed, at low speed it's flaws are extremely apparent.

Second, it is almost completely necessary to set the ingame steering lock rotation to the maximum, 792 degrees, if I remember correctly, no matter what your actual physical steering wheel rotation setting is. This drastically improves the turning circle of the car, and turn-in ability. You can find this setting in the car setup menus, I recommend setting it once and saving it as a setup to work off of later, and simply loading the car setup save in every event or stage you go into.

I would also seriously recommend only using at maximum 540 degrees of lock to lock rotation on your steering wheel, I have personally always used 450 degrees.


As a sidenote, when playing using simply a controller, Dirt Rally 2.0's physics feel perfect to me, absolutely as real as I've seen yet. I can't conclusively say that without having tried it on a wheel yet, but I've seen similar reviews praising it when compared to the real cars. At first glance, if you have issue with the physics, I suggest looking at the FFB options, the first Dirt Rally was notorious for it's FFB settings making the rest of the physics feel worse than they are.

RBR's gravel physics can feel slightly too slippy (almost as if you were a road sweeper in the rally), and the tarmac physics... Well, having the issues I mentioned at the start of this post. It absolutely captures something very few other rally games have though, which is the feeling of precision, and having absolute control over the car at all times, never feeling like the game is getting in the way of the experience.
