Where did you learn that it doesn't work? It's supposed to work fine nowadays.
I got the disease from a vampire normally and we waited 3 in-game days and nothing happened. So I used this command startscript vampire_aundae_pc.
I Know is from two years ago but I could find much on being a vampire with the mob.

sleep (rest) somewhere for at least 1 hour, then 3 days
player->addspell "Vampire Blood Aundae"
PCJoinFaction "Clan Aundae" (or "Aundae Clan"). If that doesn't work try
PCRaiseRank "Clan Aundae" (or PCRaiseRank "Aundae Clan")
*the vampires 'in the wild' as it were, might give you the disease but aren't actually part of the clan factions and are likely to keep attacking you.
Go to Ashmelech and try to talk to the vampires, if they're hostile you might need a calm spell. Generally better not to get infected at the clan hq's.
How did you do the waiting? Did you actually spend 3 days on the server? (That's what you're supposed to do.)
Alright I'll try that next time I'm on.
Yes that's how I waited.
