Hardware decoding support? Broadcom Crystal HD
Curious if Hardware video encoding will be supported. Just for kicks, I have a couple year old HP Mini Netbook(n450/2gb/60gbSSD/BCM70012) I tried this streaming with, and unsurprisingly the Broadcom Crystal HD card did not engage, and was left to encode with the Integrated video. I would love to have this type of hardware encoding available to more devices Net tops etc. if i can decode Blu-Ray quality with this device i see no reason that a video stream from a client PC would be any more difficult. Anyhow just some food for thought !

I also think this could be of good use.

My netbook has a BCM70015 CrystalHD decoder. Would be cool if steam could detect and use CrystalHD decoder.

Old machines with that $30 card can decode full 1080p even on small atom processors.

This would be nice.

I was thinking of getting one of these for my old Mac Mini. I understand they work in XBMC, it would be great if it also worked in Steam. That'd save me a lot of $$$ on a more expensive upgrade!

It's not going to happen. You are better off just saving up and buying a modern device. Even the cheapest modern intel processors support VAAPI hardware decoding which is supported by modern video players and steam streaming already.

yeah, I broke down and bought a new HTPC ages ago and it streams 1080p really nice. The old mac mini has been relegated to the kids room :-)

What are you actually takling about? Using the steam link as a NAS? No thats a terrible idea, the CPU is already utilized to the limit.

Running games directly off your NAS? Slightly more possible although your games are most likely going to run like balls. Pretty much every modern game streams assets and doing so over a NAS is going to induce massive latency and throughput penalties.
