Steam Link 2 (Hardware)
I would really love an updated steam link 2 that could just do 4K/60 out of the box. I recently started using my steam link again and I really love it now I have a good LAN. But I know eventually I'm gonna want to start gaming at a higher resolution, more than the existing 1080p/60.

A lot of the hardware out there kinda sucks. I just want the simplicity and ease of use of the Link hardware!

Chromecast 4K w/ GTV (I own this!): SoC is too underpowered for 4K. Dualsense trackpad gets taken over by android and I can't use it with Steam Input.

Shield TV: Most likely the same trackpad issue.

Raspberry Pi: The 3s max out at 1080p/60 which is no better than my Link! The 4 (from what I've heard on reddit) might have issues with steam link! (still might be my best option here tho)

Smart TVs: Can't be guaranteed to work! Samsung just removed all the Steam Link apps from their TVs!

there are many better alts as you said above

on 4k tvs its and many 4k devices its not the soc or cpu thats the problem, its the bandwidth needed, 4k takes over 100mb/s which is their limit on fast ethernet port, while a gigabit nic on the tv or device would do it with no problem at all

if using wifi, make sure the router tv support 802.11ac or better for a faster connection

htpc or an old laptop would work just fine using windows link app or steam client
the pi 4 has gigabit lan and supports 4k, but they cost around $100
nvidia shield can do 4k if you can find one

android box, just make sure it has a gigabit lan port

Sorry to necro post....
We still use our Steam Link in the basement on the big screen. Would love to see an updated hardware version.
Wishlist:
Gigabit Ethernet
Wifi 6 or 7
Bluetooth 5.2
HDR
4 usb ports instead of only 3.
I think I'm more interested in higher refresh rate, higher bitrate, HDR, and more stable connectivity than 4K. Our 4K TV looks pretty good if you feed it a decent 1080p video with low compression (high bitrate).

Another option is to try the onn Google TV 4K Pro running the steam link app. It has 32GB of storage, an ethernet port and USB A port, and much more CPU power than the Chromecast GTV.
