Low resolution when someone invited to Remote Play
Hello,

I have started having issues with Steam Remote Play. My friends and I have been playing using "Remote Play Together" for a long time without any issues.
Recently however, when I tried hosting, the resolution of any game that I tried inviting my friends to would immediately get lowered to minimum and screen ratio set to 4:3 as soon as I clicked "Invite to Remote Play Together" for anyone.
This is definitely not a hardware or bandwidth issue, upload and download are both stable at 1Gbit/s and everything always worked until now.
GPU is ASUS Nvidia 2070, so I'm thinking maybe it could have been cause by a driver update? I can't think of anything else that could have changed.
The game settings still show that resolution is set to 2560x1440, but the actual screen resolution is no higher than 800x600. This happens for every game that I try streaming over Remote Play.

I've already contacted Steam Support but they have not been able to help.

have the same issue
whenever I'm inviting friend - resolution automatically goes from 1080p to ~360p

But I found workaround for this - I'm preparing manually switch to 1080p via windows screen params, and when sending invite - instantly alt+tab to apply setting
but this is annoying

p.s. Asus 2070 as well (from laptop G731GW Strix), tried multiple drivers, 0 help

I have the same issue but only on a few games. I have opened a thread with a bit more detail since i could not find yours. In my case it changes the resolution to 480p which makes the Steam overlay basically unusable and notification are hiding half of the screen. Which games are affected by this issue in your case?

Games where I had this issue all the time:
For The King (IronOak Games, Unity, resized to 480p)
Pummel Party (Rebuilt Games, Unity, resized to 480p)
Move or Die (ThoseAwesomeGuys, LÖVE, Screen cropped to 480p)

Games without this issue:
LEGO Star Wars - The Complete Saga (Traveller's Tales, Proprietary)

I'm going to append to this list as soon as I testet other games.

I'm using an AMD R9 290X on Windows.

Well this workaround might not be suitable for Linux or macOS hosts and will definitely be hard to perform when using normal Remote Play to your TV on top of that (like me for example).

I managed to get this to work again after the latest Nvidia drivers came out and after messing with the settings some more.
In Settings>Remote Play>Advanced Host Options and Advanced Client Options I've configured everything like this:

@Inquisitor, thx, will try your setting
but my suggestion - don't use "unlimited" bandwidth as it slightly increases latency (e.g. QTE became hard to perform)

Thanks for sharing you settings. I deactivated them one by one and it seems "Change desktop resolution to match streaming client" in the Advanced Host Options is the troublemaker option. I think it's kind of pointless to make this feature available on Remote Play Together and I thought it would only affect "normal" Remote Play. But it's still a bug. It should not decrease the desktop resolution if the streaming client (your friends desktop) resolution is the same as the hosts resolution. And it should not behave differently on different games.

This is a bug for both my friend and I, and it happens 100% of the time on certain games, on 3 different machines. Every time we invite someone to Remote Play Together the entire computer's resolution gets set to some absurdly low resolution like 640x480 or something. Then you have to tab out of the game, open the Windows or GPU resolution settings window and reapply the correct resolution (which is difficult because these windows were not designed to scale that low and be easily usable). Then you have to set the resolution again in-game sometimes.

This bug is probably 2 years old and it reaaaally needs to get squashed, as it makes the whole feature very cumbersome and going to turn potential players away.

Games that I've experienced this on:
  • Gang Beasts
  • Wizard of Legend
  • Move or Die

I know there's some other games this happens on but I'm forgetting them at the moment.

My original post about this from the mega thread (Post #169) had this info:

ISSUE:
My display resolution and refresh rate are changed to 640x480 @ 60 Hz every time I invite someone to Remote Play Together.

OS:
Windows 10 Pro x64 Build 19042

STEPS:
-Start Game
-Invite someone to Remote Play Together

RESULTS:
My resolution is immediately changed to 640x480 @ 60 Hz. I am forced to manually repair the resolution by alt-tabbing out.

EXPECTED:
My resolution and refresh rate should not change from my 2560x1440 @ 240 Hz.

Notes:
-Cancelling the invite sometimes brings the resolution back to normal
-Inviting more than one person will cause the resolution to change on every single invite. I need to invite everyone first, then change the resolution back to normal
-This bug has been on-going for a year now
