Streaming client freezes / app crash when alt+tab

The steam client randomly (after a few seconds) crashes / freezes now when switching into window mode (alt+enter), doing something else in Windows and then clicking back into the Steam window, showing just a circling cursor and it's frozen, with just sound working, and a white border on the right side:

I cant reproduce it with 100% certainity, but it happens a lot. This never happened before with any client version... nice. Mostly just go window mode, do a bit outside of the window, switch back, and bam, crash.

I was able to fix this by turning off my antivirus on the host computer (I was running Kaspersky).

I fixed this on Windows 7 by disabling Aero (changed my theme to Windows Basic). Went from frequent freezes to none in over a month.

I'm on Win10 now and I'm struggling to fix it. The window can be unfrozen by toggling "Transparency effects" under Personalization > Colors, but I am having to click this regularly to unfreeze the screen.

So for me personally, this is reproduceable by clicking out of the streaming window, then try to click back into it. I can 100% unfreeze it by alt tabbing focus back to the streaming window instead of clicking focus to it. Hope this helps someone else!

@Judger - This works for me. Exactly same problem you earlier described, "...this is reproduceable by clicking out of the streaming window, then try to click back into it..." I can confirm that on my computer, I have success (100% so far) by alt+tab back to the stream.

For me, streaming worked fine up until a few days ago - now, 100% of the time the window freezes when I go back to it. ALT+TAB is a great workaround.

I stopped using this crap software long time ago and use http://moonlight-stream.com/, which works 1000 times better if you have Nvidia GPU. I have sent countless reports for this issue to the main developer of Valve, and he always said "he cant reproduce it", where I can reproduce it on every single PC I have tested it.

I found a fix. I don't know how to describe it, but basically there is an error in the hard drive.

To fix, this is what I did.

1) Open Command Prompt (run as Administrator) and typed in " CHKDSK /f /r ".......it will ask you if you want to run CHKDSK after you restart your machine......say "yes" and restart computer.

2) After Windows restarts, re-open Command Prompt (run as Administrator) and type in "sfc /scannow"

When I ran that line of code, it found errors and automatically fixed them. After that, my issue was fixed. Seems to me this was a solid fix, as I feel ya'll are having the same issue as me. My issue was that, I'd stream my games from the gaming PC in my bedroom into the laptop I have in the living room. I'd open a game, and it'd freeze, and I'd have to end the task in task manager. I could never load any game. The minute I did this, the issue was fixed, and I'm happily streaming my games once again!
