You can make a steam machine now...
Steam OS/Steam Machines will be pretty much of what ive seen something you can already make.

Just format ur PC, you can get lite versions of windows that dont run unessecery services.

Then just install steam, tick autorun, select steam as the shell that windows boot and then tick "Start in Big picture mode" in the settings.

Tada, thats ur "steam OS"

To get back to windows just CTRL+ALT+DEL, New task "Explorer.exe" then press the power off button in the top right corner of steam and press "Back to Desktop"

With a few tweaks you can stream your games to ur PC, not just the game but a mirror of the image of ur PC.

A xbox controller is recommended.

sorry blatton but you are absolutely wrong. not only is getting "light" versions of windows illegal. but is actually illegal 2 times. cause you are not allowed to download. or modify windows. but the whole point of steamos is harnessing the power of linux. trust me ive gamed on linux before. your fps is hugely increased, plus linux doesnt use up as much ram as windows does
You can create your own lite version from the legal licence. You can modify the installation or if you don't want to manipulate with the installation, you can just install the system and then disable all the services you don't want to have, do a few tweaks and it is done. Nothing illegal.

Of course. But with technology like this when streaming over the internet is possible, streaming over the home network should be much easier to implement with much less problems and with much smaller latency. Tht's probably what Potewar wanted to say with the "This was already done before" claiming.
Streaming high quality video is one thing. But don't forget that the user controls have to go back the other way. And be in sync-with no noticeable lag to the user.
If anybody thinks its easy and it'll work straight away, why is there an In-home streaming Beta?

nvidia Gamestream has achieved it recently - this month - with good success but look at the hardware limitations it has placed.
more and more big games are moving to support linux its early days but its coming :)

I bought a Alienware X51 running Ubuntu not that long ago in anticipation of the whole Steambox thing. I am a little disappointed in amount of games available in Linux, about 25 of 325 games I currently own. I managed to work around this by doing installs via wine - but it's a pain in the butt. I can't see the SteamOS really working unless they can get support for more major titles in Linux

2Mbps LOL. Not at all representative of anything that Steam In-home Streaming is aiming to achieve.

Don't understand how configuring a Windows install makes it a "lite" version! never mind how running steam client on windows makes it steamos.
Don't want to either :Clot:
Oh No you can't

Really looking forward to SteamOS and using the in home streaming feature to play my windows games.

Would super computers in the Cloud fix latency issues for lower speeced machines!?

There are software available online that provide 3D modelling to low specced mobile machines which allow user to process a picture/photo into 3D model automagically ready for 3D printing. This is only achievable by using super computer on Cloud provided by software provider thus allowing low specced machines to display output from high specced machine within seconds...

Is it possible for in home streaming to be using super computer in Cloud?
An internet connection is still needed for Steam client; when in home streaming, right?

No (for games that support offline mode).

I have to kind of agree. Look at the Wii U. Lackluster titles are killing it and now there rumors of Ninendo possibly having to drop the entire console if it underpeforms for Winter sales.

SteamOS needs titles. Something to motivate the PC user - some of which have great setups and some of which have moderate to weak laptop setups - to shell out $$ for both the machine and the new titles. Or even a good selection of OLD titles ported to Linux. And I'd love to tinker with a Steam version of Wine on there if possible.

The PS4 lineup is okay, but still nothing making it a must buy situation. And some of the big name titles on there are honestly just so-so titles that are pretty. I went over to a Best Buy today to see how the reaction to the PS4 was....underwhelming to say the least. A few people stop and look, but there are still consoles on the floor and no real demo just a video on a loop. It's not a big enough reaction. You want new iphone reaction and that's not what they got. XBONE has a better lineup and will get a better reaction, though I generally dislike MS and I never bothered to buy a 360. Part of that is also the death knoll of Best Buy and the death knoll of consoles. I remember when the Wii first came out in 2007(?) it had a slow buildup until it suddenly caught on & I literally saw people RUNNING when a Best Buy restock guy put down a pallet of Wii's. That's the reaction you want. I'm not sure if consoles can do that anymore. The Wiimote was a bit gimmicky, but it was fun in the beginning until the Wii became a kid's toy instead of a conole, which then evolved - at least in my house - into a Netflix player occasionally used to game. The Wii U disinterested gamers with the title selection and has little casual audience anymore because we use our phones/tablets for casual games now. It's just little kids playing the Wii U and an occasional Dad. PS4 interestes me more, but titles are still lacking and MAN they are expensive compared to Steam. Xbone has a lot more to offer, but do I want it? I'm their target audience - 30something Dad with kids - and it does not wow me. Why? Because I just want an awesome gaming experience, not a new entertainment box. The Steam controller excites me more than the whole PS4 console. I may not even buy a console, just revamp an old desktop or stream to my laptop from my desktop. Either way I want to play with SteamOS because I enjoy the community and the gaming more than anything the consoles are offering me. If they center it around the gaming experience they will do fine. PC streaming will be a huge key in that.

This is Valve. Nothing happens fast in Valve World. And whether SteamOS is deemed a success or not will not be known for a year or two or even more. Its release is nothing like the console releases. For starters there's no definitive off-the-shelf hardware lump that Valve has to sell in great quantities at massive losses (although some people seem to think they will become a major hardware seller). We all need to switch to Valve Time and chillax.

As said, SteamOS will need titles, thats what it all comes down to. That, and a performance boost.

+1 BlattoN this is what is killing nintendo's wi sales and which means we have to wait also waiting in Valve time as grumpycrab says. Here is a link Doc Holliday posted in another thread indicating what Valve Time is

Well, 400 titles before release is not bad. The PS4 barely had anything.

or buy ... A PC with nVidia GTX650 and up graphics card and nVidia Shield allows streaming your PC games to other PC's, big screen and mobile devices. The UK TV programme The Gadget Show featured this in this weeks episode.
Don't want to take away from what Valve are doing but it appears many well established companies are already ahead of the game. I thought they Valve were pioneering and not just keeping up with current industry trends.
Which makes the need for titles in Steam Store more apparent to attract PC gamers and console gamers to switch to Steam.
Some of the things Valve can not deny are outlined well here: http://www.gamezone.com/originals/2013/11/16/a-lack-of-exclusives-is-one-less-reason-to-buy-a-steam-machine

I have tried to show off Steam to many friends; some of whom are console gamers and some are PC gamers, trying to convince them to at least try the Steam client out. Not one has actually even bothered to download the Steam client.

Yet...

They don't see why they should rebuy what they allready got or prefer to run their games without an extra overlay. I try to argue Steam Store sales alone should be enough to convince them ...

Simply searching the web for "micro gaming pc" will give many detailed instruction on how to build a micro gaming machine giving a better illustration of what Valve are attempting to take on but it still will not be a Steam Machine without SteamOS. Running your games through Steam client does not make your PC a Steam Machine.
