In Home Streaming and xbox 360 controller support for games that natively suppprt controller.
Thought would try and start thread where beta testers can share known working list of streaming configurations allowing use of controller when streaming.
Most posters here who mention any success of getting controller to work when streaming are using steam for linux from linux desktop for their streaming client.

Streaming with SteamOS and any controller other than steam controller as client appears to be broken.

Could folks with WORKING controller when streaming please share their working setup including:
  • OS,
  • if BPM was used or not,
for both host and client machines.

  • controller,
  • game.

I find an easy controller solution is using the wireless xbox controller plugged in to the host machine. The wireless range of the controller goes all around my house with no issues, and linking up the controller works at the touch of a button while in any room.

I'm interested in this also. I just ordered an XBOX 360 wireless gaming receiver for my gaming PC. This was so I could run a 15ft HDMI cable to TV and play on that with my xbox controller. However, I've downloaded the SteamOS and hopefully going to try and install this weekend on an HP 8000 Desktop, w/ 8GB RAM and an old 8600GT slotted in. From a previous thread I started I now understand the controller communicates with the streaming client and not the Host directly, so I could have an uphill struggle on my hands (no wireless on desktop). I believe even installing without a UEFI BIOS is a job in itself. I will post here and let you know if I get anywhere.

oh just saw this....so you can connect controller to the host.

hmmm how does game(host) know what to do if it is not getting input from controller "directly"?
In theory a wired controller connected to client simply passes input to host then outcome of which gets sent back to client. The game running on host needs input.
There is a brilliant illustration of this in the announcements for this group.

Installing SteamOS to a BIOS machine is not a problem allthough is still not yet officially supported. Many solutions to this can be found at SteamOS bug tracker at GitHub.

My wired Xbox 360 controller works when I'm streaming to my Macbook running Windows 7, but not when I'm streaming to a Linux box (it does work in big picture mode on the Linux box, just not when streaming to it).

I did notice that for it to work on the Macbook I had to have it plugged in when launching the game (via the streaming client) - hotplugging it or starting streaming some time after launching the game from the host didn't work.

I have a wired 360 controller connected to the streaming PC and it works in Rogue Legacy but not in Wolf Among Us. I think the problem came from having to launch Wolf Among Us first in the host PC in order to get the game streamed though. Both PC's are on Win7.

I have a cheap wireless reciever for x360 controller which I bought on dealextreme a while ago, plugged into my client. I just tested it by streaming Assassins Creed from my desktop, and it worked flawless. No problem neither on the streaming part nor the controller.
Summary:
OS: Windows 7 x64
BigPicture Mode: No
Controller: Wireless x360 with a cheap dongle from dealextreme.
Game: Assassins Creed (1)

I just want a clarification on the controller.

Can I:

A: Run the controller (xbox and/or playstation) from the PC RECIEVING the stream?

B: Run the controller (xbox and/or playstation) from the PC SENDING the stream?

C: Contoller will work on both.

I ask this because my beefy gaming PC is in my basement and my living room TV that I want to plug a laptop into is one floor up. I am concerened about the wireless or blutooth controller reception from a seperate floor.

Yes to all three.
In theory the controllers should work when connected to receiving (client) stream and is the intended purpose/use of in home streaming service.
The outcome seems to be affected by which game is being streamed and which controller as well as if steam@steamos BPM is used on host (sending) machine.

It had never even occurred to me that would work. Solves my problem of how I was going to use a controller on Mac clients. Now, of course, this really makes me want an iPad client - for controller games that would be a perfect "anywhere around the house" solution...

That's how I'm doing it. No problems with controller issues by doing this.

Controller support was explained earlier like so:

Computer A is streaming and Computer B is recieving

If only Computer A has a controller connected, it will use those controls

If only Controller B has a controller connected, it will use those controls

If both computers have controllers connected, it will only use Computer Bs controls.

Yep. Covered here, on the rules for which controller is active:

Connecting a wireless 360 controller to the host doesn't "count", though. It may work in your house but it's not a viable streaming solution. It needs to work on the client, streaming needs to be seamless and "just work" or people won't adopt it.
