How to force Intel Quicksync encoding vs AMD encoding
Currently on my host machine, I'm using software encoding. Despite it's working great, for some games, I'm facing some minor lags.
I've tried AMD encoding...and to be honest...it's far from stable and universal. Compared to software encoding, only a few games is working on AMD encoding..:(
I was able to use iGPU encoding before Steam September update (when AMD encoding was put in place)...and it was working great!
Thus I would like to force again intel Quicksync for encoding...but I didn't find how to force intel Quicksync vs AMD. On Nvidia drivers it is simple...and on AMD..I didn't find nothing to force iGPU instead of discrete GPU.

Thank you in advance for your support

Of course : my iGPU is activated.

Thanks for adding the option. This will help a lot. However, I would love to see this stuff as override on a per game base and also I would like to chose which encoding method on the NVidia side (NvIFR desktop and windowed, NvFBC).
Don´t get it wrong I really appreciate the effort you guys are doing here. Great job.
Hello,

I confirm, choosing in big picture the encoder, is a very nice feature.
Currently using intel QuickSync, and will try again amf encoder + hardware decoder once it's fixed.

No need to mess the amf folder anymore :)

Thanks Valve for adding this very usefull option :)

Where is everyone seeing the option at exactly? Looking on the host in big picture and I am not finding anything new. Yes I am in the beta channel and it has updated.
I just moved from a GTX 570 to a 290X. The ability to switch on and off the Quicksync encoder or the AMD encoder is very useful. Some games work well with the AMD encoder (Bioshock Infinite, Metro 2033) and other need Quicksync (Witcher 2, Portal 2). This is using Steam Link as a client.
It would be great to have per game profiles

Ok first problem. I try to run Braid with NVidia hardware encoding turned off Quicksync turned on. The game starts at the host, but my clients (mac) Steam is killed every time I start it. If I turn on NVidia hardware encoding it works, but the funny thing is, Quicksync is used nevertheless.
Both the host and the client are on the latest steam betas.

Hardware Intel i5 3570, NVidia 970, 8 Gig of Ram

Second problem, I have a gog installation of the Witcher 3, I tried to start it via steam locally and it wont start anymore. Reverting to the non beta Steam client did not help either. I can start the game from Galaxy or directly, but not from Steam anymore.
I've just checked.
On my first try, I've left my AMF folder roadblock and I didn't notice anything on Steam big picture.
On my second try, I've removed the roadblock, and encoder choice appeared! Nvidia and Intel were checked by default..whereas I've AMD or Intel available...:) I've just check Intel quicksync and it was 100% working!

Thank you again for your great support!!

This option is in Big Picture in the current beta client. Please let us know how it works for you!

Thanks and working good on my end. I really hope we can eventually do this with out the big picture mode. I am not the biggest fan of that mode. But otherwise works as advertised
Actually this feature save a lot of time.
I have an old 16" crt from 1996 era, and to not destroy my eyes , i use my laptop, so streaming is very nice feature.

Been able to choose the hardware encoder, it's really awesome i repeat it :)

Damn you Valve!!!
I've wasted an entire day figuring out why the hell AMD encoding isn't working even though hardware encoding was checked...
I NEVER use steam big picture mode and guess which of the 3 encoders wasn't checked...
I could emphasize when quicksync and/or NVE is checked in the case one of those was actually avaiable in my system... But why on earth only untic AMD in an all AMD system? And since steam is aware of the hardware present in my system why doesn't it use that information?

And lastly why in gods name is there a difference in options between normal and big picture mode... Was it REALLY to much to add these 3 tickboxes to the ADVANCED host options in desktop steam mode? It sure could have saved me hours of reinstalling drivers and sifting through logs why it didn't work...
Cause amd encoding is so bad, it can't be enabled by default. :)
Sure but that's only all the more reason to add global options like this to the desktop settings as well, instead of hidning it in big picture mode...
True, it's sucks thats only available in bpm.
ya i hate big picture mode tbh...dont understand why there is no way to just do this in the normal stream settings.
simply because big picture mode is used by more device (pc, steam machine, steam link) than desktop mode.

AMD encoding is not that bad...and once again it's not linked to AMD directly. Valve development force is not infinite, and they focused first on GPU that are the most present on market : Nvidia for discrete gpu and Intel for igpu. We cannot blame Valve for that.
But now, AMD encoding is fine for steam link, so I'm pleased...except I need to switch back to intel encoding when streaming on PC..:)
