How do I tell if my desktop-to-desktop streaming is using a relay or not?
On the detailed overlay on the client, I can't find anything that says if it's directly connected or if it's streaming via relay.

On one line, it's saying:
Connected UDP@(my internet ip address):(port)

Does this mean it's using a relay?

I used to be able to stream locally without problems from the PC to my laptop but out of the blue, now I get choppy audio and I can't even play anything because the video stream freezes at the start menu of any game.

I don't remember changing anything significant or network-related with my setup and this just happened all of a sudden.

lag
if network ping is 0 then its using direct connection

you can also try 'netstat -n' on host
ports 27031,27036,27037 are used for remote play

could also log into the router, and watch upload/download bandwidth
if its uploading alot 30-50+mb/s, then its using internet relay

Thanks! Is there a way to force Steam to ONLY use local connection and fail when it can't instead of using relay?

no that i know of
when something tries to connect, it will use relay if direct wont connect

you could try using the router to block those ports
but if you need to connect from another location it wont work

best to just make sure windows network is set to private, any vpn is disabled, host/client are connecting to the same router
if using wifi, disable wifi isolation
and direct is enabled, steam -> settings -> remote play

then check ..\steam\logs\streaming.log.txt, and look at network ping
