Roku TV
http://blog.roku.com/blog/2014/01/05/introducing-roku-tv/

I have no idea if this is even possible (though I seem to be having the same pipe dream that everyone else is lately), but if a Steam channel can be made for this new Roku TV and the 5 million other Rokus[www.roku.com] out there, I'd be going at it hammer and tongs to make one!

Roku 3 - $100
PC most people already have - $0
Steam - FREE
-----------------------------
TOTAL - $100

If I had a choice between the only You Don't Know Jack title in Roku's Channel store for $4.99, or 10 Volumes of You Don't Know Jack for $2.99 apiece on Steam, guess where my money is going?

The most interesting thing about this would be to see what the upper, threadbare, hardware limit of casual PC users would wind up being for such a setup. Short of the usual-suspect, face-melting games, I imagine it would be quite favorable.

It is linux based but the problem I see with it is there is no port of steam for ARM as of yet. I won't say its not possible but its more of a maybe...someday sort of deal.

Technically there already is a port of sorts, of Steam on ARM. The mobile apps for iOS and Android. I see no reason they couldn't add streaming to them, and even release it as a channel for Roku devices.

I also see no reason why someone couldn't build a ~$100 x86 Steam Machine, built to run SteamOS proper, and only intended for streaming and media playback. You take something like an EEE PC, remove the monitor, keyboard, and touch pad, put the free SteamOS on it instead of Windows, and you've got about $100 worth of computer that could easily handle streaming. Put that in a small box intended to go in a media center / near the TV, and you're good to go.

It would definitely be nifty, that's for sure!

Roku even has an app for iTunes and Android[play.google.com] which works really well through the WiFi. (Except for that screen rotate!)

Just Krazy Glue your smartphone to the empty space on the new Steam Controller prototype and you are really good to go! :grinsam:

GREAT IDEA!

Thanks to you, I actually just realized that my old netbook running LMDE can drive a 37" 1080p monitor, down in the basement, via VGA cable! (Can ANYONE'S iPad do that???!!!)

Never woulda' thunk it!

Of course, everything "LOOKED" great, but aside from the fact that it is a GDMF netbook, the network lag + wireless controller is enough to get you killed in Flower.

Time for powerlines!!! And maybe a nice, unassuming Logitech wired.

I don't think it's possible because roku channels have their own api and have to use brightscript to make your channels.

Have a roku, would like to see this happen.

This would steal so much console market share. Steam, if this is easy, please do it.

I built a steam machine using Gigabyte Brix. I get Windows Licenses cheap through work, but also had it working OK with linux. It would also be capable of being a media centre. Cost about £140 all in - let me know if you want me to post the specs.

Post them in a new thread specific to the Gigabyte Brix. That might be better. There's even a SteamOS subgroup for it: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions

Many people are very interested the Brix and building Intel NUCs, especially for In-Home Streaming: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream/discussions/0/540732347355428411/

I think this thread is a little off topic for those.
