Can I Enable Family View Only On the Family PC?
I just got the email a couple of days ago welcoming me to the streaming beta. It instructed me to download the beta client, but the next time I logged into Steam it updated the client and I now have the streaming and family view options.

I'm trying to setup family view first because this sounds like just what I need. Right now on the Family PC I have Steam set to offline, and I block it in the firewall so no one using that PC can login as me.

I enabled family view and set it up on my gaming PC, but whenever I log in on it, it starts out in family view and I have to enter my PIN to be able to use friends, etc. I would like to have my gaming PC start in normal mode and only have the family PC start up in Family Mode. I don't see a way to do this though. Am I missing something or is this not possible.

I don't think there is a way of having family view on one pc but not the other because it's the same account. I recommend lifting restrictions on friend chat and groups.
Go to
  • Steam (top right corner)
  • Settings
  • Family
  • Manage family view
  • Put a check mark on friends, chat and groups.
Or alternatively you can make a seperate account and add it to your family library sharing but I haven't really tested it yet.

Edit: I tested it and it's rather annoying.
Go on your family pc and verify it ( Steam->settings->family).
Log in as a diffrent account and verify steamguard (steam explains what to do).
Now play a game and it will request permission from your original account.

That would defeat the purpose of not wanting anyone using that computer to log in as me to Steam friends, etc. I'm not in the family sharing beta, I wish I was. I've been planning to create a separate Steam account for the family, and even have games in my inventory I bought to activate on that account. Doesn't the streaming only work if you're logged in as the same user on both PCs though?

It seems Steam streaming still works in offline mode, so I suppose I'll have to keep that PC offline and disable Family View.

I haven't tried to stream anything yet, I'm doing all of the setup by remote desktop right now so I don't have to keep going back and forth between rooms.

I think the steam beta update should have straming and family sharing. Check it out because I'm not so sure myself ( Steam->settings->family-> Family library sharing).
You might have to suck it up and always use the family pin or make a seperate account and family share it whatever suits you best.

Yeah streaming only works from the same account and won't I mention anything else because it kinda ruins the idea of beta testing it and checking out all the diffrent variables.

I don't have the Family library sharing in my options. :(

That sucks because I don't know any other alternatives. Hope you find the streaming beta fun.

You have to join the Family sharing group and wait for Beta access to get the sharing feature. Join here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/familysharing
