Crackling/Tearing Audio

So I tested the in-home streaming this morning from my Desktop (i5 2500k, 8gb ram, 2x7950, windows 7) to an older laptop (i7 nehalem (cant remember exact chip), 8gb ram, AMD 5470 GPU running windows 7) and it worked without issue.

I then decided to install SteamOS on the laptop, which was painless, however, when it comes to streaming a game, the audio is all crackly and makes tearing noises. The sound works fine on the desktop and when starting up SteamOS, it only has issues when streaming.

I found one thread (in here) which linked to another thread (elsewhere) that mentioned changing the default sample rate in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, so I edited it and rebooted, then tried again, this time the audio is just crackly, not nearly as bad, but far too annoying to actually play anything.

I've tried changing sampling rates and bit rates on the desktop machine as well as swapping between my SB XFI Titanium sound card and the realtek onboard sound for the output device on the desktop.

While google gave me a little luck at first, I've been unable to find any other suggested solutions, anyone come across this and resolved it?

I had audio crackling on my Win 8.1 client, fixed it by setting the HDMI device audio format (in the taskbar Playback devices) to 16bit 48000 Hz.

click properties
click advanced tab
select 24bit, 48000hz (studio quality)



This fixed the constant audio skips for me!

Just a note of interest on the crackling problems, I finally got to experimenting and pulled out my Soudblaster FX PCI card, and am running off of my onboard soundcard. Guess what? No more crackling. This may be an issue with older no longer supported soundcards.

Setting PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 before launching steam solved the crackling audio problems for me. The streaming host was a Windows 7 PC. The streaming client was a Linux Mint 17.2 PC.

Just to add I'm also having the same issue with tearing / crackling audio. I wil try setting the sound to 16bit 48000 hz. Is anyone getting the same issue using a RJ45 cable? I'm sure this will be addressed in future updates. As I doubt its our internet connection as i'm running at 60mb/s

Try turning off audio enhancements on the host machine, in the speaker properties dialog. Check the "Disable all sound effects" checkbox.

Confirming this as a working solution to the permanent sound static/crackle in all games while streaming from Windows 10 to Ubuntu 15.10 (using HDMI audio output). Excellent fix!

I had the same issue but a slightly different build, streaming from a Windows 7 PC to a AMD-powered Dell Zino running Ubuntu 14.04. In case it's useful to anyone, I tried a number of recommendations, both from here and in other threads specific to In-Home Streaming, but the only fix that worked for me was a suggestion found in discussion about a similar bug[github.com] in SteamOS.

In short, open Terminal and do this:

sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa

Look for this line:

load-module module-udev-detect

Change it to this:

load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

Press Ctrl - X to exit, then Y to save your changes, and Enter to save to the same file. Restart your computer and see how it works!

I had the same issue on an MacBook Air with OSX. Just enter "Audio Midi Setup" in spotlight. The Sampling rate was at 44.1 khz. I set it to 48 khz, and see there, no more crackling sound!

I tried everthing on this page and I couldn't get it to work. Still cracking over HDMI unfortunately. I'm running and AMD "Turks/Whistler" on a Mac Mini on top of Fedora 25, although when I ran Ubuntu I had the same issue.

If you're stuck like me, you might just need to run a 3.5mm cable from the PC to the TV Audio In. My Samsung TV's audio in was labelled something like "PC/DVI Audio". To get my TV to override the HDMI audio with the 3.5mm audio I had to change the name of the input to PC/DVI. Works perfectly now! Finally back to being able to control the volume with the TV remote.

Hopefully this helps someone out anyway. I know what it's like to be the person scratching their head trying to google for answers :).

Excellent Fix for me. I updated OSX on my macbook pro and I had no idea why I suddenly had a cracking problem.

I'm fighting with the crackling sound for more than a year now. Setting the audio cards on both pcs to 16 or 24 bit, 48kHz doesn't help. Disabling all sound effects doesn't help either.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks people. Setting the output to 48 kHz stops the cracking audio for me.

However, I usually use a pair of Bluetooth headphones. These do not support anything other than 44.1 kHz. So that would seem to mean that I can't use In-Home Streaming with my headphones without cracking. GAH!
