Tweaks for streaming non-Steam games (Guild Wars 2 in particular)?
Has anyone had any success streaming non-Steam games? It's theoretically possible, but I understand it's not supported and not a priority.

Nevertheless, the thought of streaming Guild Wars 2 from my desktop gaming rig to my laptop is intriguing enough for me to at least ask.

Streaming Natural Selection 2 (probably the most resource intensive game in my Steam library) to my laptop worked much better than anticipated, so I'm very excited about the possibilities. Even if I can't get non-Steam games streaming, I'm very pleased with this feature so far.

For the fun of it, I was able to stream Minecraft without too much of a hassle. I have not tried anything else yet. In theory, so long as the game is able to support the Steam community overlay, you should be able to stream it.

I have tried Zandronum source port (Doom 2), traditional retail Doom 3, and just for shiggles an IDE (Code Blocks). With the exception of Code Blocks obviously, all of them worked fine; Doom 3 went surprisingly well (butt-ton of Sikkmod tweaks enabled).

I got a little farther (though not much) with streaming GW2 using Steam by setting GW2 to Windowed Fullscreen mode. Unfortunately, the game freezes at a white screen on the host machine and just shows a black screen on the client machine. :(

All I get when I try to stream a non-Steam game is a box that says "Stream launch failed: Couldn't connect to the remote computer." The game appears to launch fine on the host PC, but Steam just throws this error on the client.

I got Battlefield 4 streaming reasonably well..

Basically, instead of trying to add an app to steam via the "Non-steam game shortcut" method, I just launch a game that has a launcher that shows up first... In my example, Borderlands 2.

When I launch that, it has the launcher come up, where I can choose play, config, or whatever, before it actually launches the full game. On that screen I mute the launcher's music, then click the minimize button... that takes me to a mirror image of my desktop. From there, I can launch anything or run anything I want and it runs fine.. You should be able to launch GW2 using this method, no problem. You will probably need to have it set up as Windowed Borderless, as Fullscreen gave me a pure white screen on the receiving end.

That said, the performance took a hit slightly.. BF4 was a bit choppy, whereas Borderlands 2 would be silky smooth.. But something like GW2 should definitely still be playable using a technique like this..

I've had success streaming gw2 with it windowed. You may have to disable the overlay to get it to work, though.

Windows Host on gigabit, Linux client on wireless-n 300mbps. Been running SWTOR (Star Wars the Old Republic) via stream. It works, some slow down when fighting and moving into new areas. Can be 60 fps for a bit..aggro a mob and end up with 22-30fps. I'm thinking, I might get better performance if I can disable the steam overlay. Did limit the bandwidth to 5, cap the framerate to 60, set the resolution to 720 in stream settings and ingame.

I'll probably throw DragonAge 2 at it soon and see how that goes...

edit: Hooked linux client up to gigabit. SWTOR runs smooth as silk. Loving this streaming.

I ran my Origin version of Sims 3 without any initial problems, everything ran as if I was at my machine, even the Steam overlay in-game ran fine over the top of Origin.

The only problem I had was trying to close the stream down completely from 2nd PC - the game closed fine, but I couldn't close the Origin client locally so was unable to stream further games until I closed it locally at the host machine. Other than that, all was ok.

I've given GW2 a go via wine/playonlinux, but performance is poor (~20 FPS with modest graphic settings on a modest modern rig).
If it'll stream nicely from a PC downstairs, that's going to be the better solution.

The problem I'm having its that I can't seem to disable the steam overlay. When I start the game it just sits there on a black screen with the steam overlay message. I have it disabled on both machines as well.

I don't actually have that many games in Steam - however nearly all of my non-steam games stream perfectly well. The only ones that didn't work were anything based on Frostbite (BFBC2, BF3, MOH:WF) and anything that launches Origin first before loading (Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3).
GeeEl 2014년 2월 7일 오전 2시 50분
@davew : If Origin is already logged in and running in the background is it any better?

@GeeEl - not for me unfortunately. I also tried adding Origin as a non-steam game and launching it from there but that didn't work either.

Got bf4 to launch and stream good and smooth, except for the mouse input, Hugh delay between action and reaction. Strafing and walking were smooth but any mouse command have Hugh lag. verified by using a wireless mouse connected to the host and it runs great.

Don't know how to solve this??

I was able to stream Final Fantasy XIV and it run smoothly so its possible but might not all games.
