If you don't hear audio, make sure Steam isn't muted
If you're streaming from Windows and you don't hear audio on the client, you may have muted Steam. Bring up the volume slider from the taskbar and click on "Mixer". That will expand the volume control to show you the master volume and controls for individual apps. At the moment, if Steam is muted there will be no audio streamed from that machine (yes, I know that sounds backwards!). Unmute it and you should be able to hear audio.

Audio streaming support is only available on Windows Vista and later.

(You can mute the speaker device if you don't want to hear the game on the server -- that will not affect your ability to stream audio.)

I've tested streaming Dota 2 and FTL from a Linux host to a Linux client. In both cases, video and input worked fine - but the audio only played on the host computer and not the client machine. Is this a known issue with Linux hosts? I did read somewhere that Linux hosts for in-home streaming is still experimental, but I wanted to provide my feedback regardless. It may be worth noting that in my case the host machine uses ALSA, and the client is using pulseaudio.

I've tested streaming from my Windows Vista 64 desktop (wired) to a Windows 7 64 laptop (WiFi) and while the video and input worked fine there is no audio. I've checked the Steam volume from the mixer as the OP suggests, and set both devices to 16-bit audio as mentioned in the 'Known Issues' list, but still nothing.

check for steam client updates.
Steam (top left corner) look for the option.
After I updated two of my computers it seemed to work.

Have the same issue but in my case I'm using pulseaudio on both host and client. As a workaround it is possible to use a (pulaseaudio) network sink on the host.

More of a problem with SteamOS for me It's always starting with the volume down/muted and I have to go to the desktop to turn it up!
Turning it up through steamos setting has no affect I have to do it from desktop!

I was having a similar issue when I first downloaded Steam on my light client (Lubuntu 13.10 running on old ThinkPad x200 P8600@.2.4GHz) and tried streaming. I'm not positive if just rebooting fixed it, but when I initially turned my client back on, I noticed I wasn't getting any sound (usually don't use sound on this PC). Installed pualseaudio and pavucontrol (“sudo apt-get install pualseaudio” and “sudo apt-get install pavucontrol”. Still no sound. Plugged in headphones, got sound. Unplugged headphones, got sound. Tired streaming again, sound on client worked correctly. Host is Windows 7 on an Asus G53 laptop.

If your steam gets auto muted by a game set the options of you communication device to "do nothing" if a communications device is detected.

Ok so from my experience I fixed the issue by setting the default audio on the pc being streamed from to speaker(steamstream) and have had no more issues with it after turning off the ability for apps to chang e settings as posted above

I solved my problem changing the Sound Output of te game to Steam stream audio on the windows App volume and device preferences option.

Certain games (Dark Souls Remastered and Blue Estate), will not output sound for me. Others, like Halo MCC... work just fine. I'll be following for answers. On my Win 10 Acer Aspire 3, I've tried everything above. My old Iphone 8S+, has no audio issues when streaming anything *sigh*

So in steam remote play I can hear my friends auto when he is the host of a game but when i host he can't hear my sound. Is there any reason I'm not broadcasting my sound or for some reason he's blocking my sound
Jenna May 23, 2020 @ 5:40am
I have also found that some games aren't streaming sound (Skyrim does but That Dragon Cancer and Ori and the Blind Forest do not). They all stream sound fine via a Steam Link and sound plays fine on the host so they are not muted. Any ideas? I already have Steam Streaming Speakers as my default sound option.

edit: Googled the problem and found another thread. The problem for me was on the host computer, I needed to click Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options > Play Audio On Host. I ticked that and now it's fine for all the games I've tried. I think this is a recent setting, for people who have only recently had this problem. And yes, some games did play audio regardless...
