Streaming over Remote Desktop Protocol in Windows
Hi all! I was able to successfully stream Castle Crashers over RDP from a VPN. It was choppy and slow, but the game worked and so did the menu with mouse and audio. Has anyone else tried streaming from one computer to another and then picked that up over RDP?

In my case:
- I VPN'd to my house.
- Connected over RDP to both the streaming client and server machines at 1024x768 with RDP set to auto. Both are running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit.
- I opened games using both Big Picture and Desktop modes and they both worked. The only one I remember is Castle Crashers.

If you RDP into the host, it will completely error out for 95% of all games. RDP disables DirectX. And RDPing into the client is going to be an awful experience. RDP is not optimized for latency. If you're using a VPN, why are you using RDP at all?

I was just testing it out yesterday for kicks since the machine I was using to RDP didn't have Steam installed.

Only turn-based games would really work with RDP, but it was an "is it possible?" idea. I guess disabling DirectX would kill all but OpenGL games right?
Most likely, or any game with a software rendering backup. But keep in mind it also requires the Steam Overlay to work on the game, so the options are limited.

I think Red's point is, if you are connected from remote to home via a VPN, you should be able to run steam on your client/local machine and stream from home without involving RDP at all.
(though you may need to use RDP to assist in configuring the initial setup)

I agree. I just need Steam running on the client and in my particular case, I did not have Steam installed.
