In-Home Streaming to an ACER C720 Chromebook using Crouton/Ubuntu/XFCE
Hi guys. I just bought a chromebook (ACER C720)

I am an absolute bonafide Linux N00b! so I apologize ahead of time in case I say things wrong or don't get the obvious points you guys try to make.

I've looked at all the forums/threads I could find regarding doing this operation. Both for getting Ubuntu onto my chromebox and getting In-Home streaming to work afterward. So far I've got Ubuntu installed. Steam Installed. Steam beta for streaming enabled on both computers (Host computer is an Alienware with windows 7.) but they just wouldn't see each other/connect to each other.

So. I followed the instructions here to install Ubuntu with crouton: http://www.howtogeek.com/162120/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-on-your-chromebook-with-crouton/

The short of it is I downloaded crouton from here: http://goo.gl/fd3zc
I used this command to install it: sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -t xfce
And I have no idea how to tell what version of Ubuntu I ended up with or what xfce means.

Anyhow, people with the same connection issue recommended this command to fix the issue:
sudo iptables -I INPUT -p udp --dport 27036 -j ACCEPT
which apparently opens up a port in the chromebook. This did not solve my problem.

I then tried a similar command for port 37804:
sudo iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 37804 -j ACCEPT

No luck. So I was finally forced to try the "dangerous" method (I assume this leaves you open to hacks/viruses/prying eyes?
sudo iptables -F

sudo iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT

sudo iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT

sudo iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT

which apparently opens everything to everyone.

Okay, so this actually worked. In steam settings "in-home streaming" the two computers saw each other and connected. (before the host saw the client but wouldn't connect and then the client would disappear from the list) Also, I finally had the all important "stream" button next to the games in my steam library.

So really, what I need help with is how do I keep this working without leaving the iptables wide open? And if I have to leave it wide open for this to work, what are my risks and what safeguards can I take?

Thanks,
Nate

Going into big picture mode on the acer allowed the "connect" option for my computer. Before it saw it but didn't connect. In big-picture mode it allows me to connect. Also, there have been serveral updates since my post. Things might just work normally now.
