Streaming on a Raspberry Pi?
Hey guys!
This new streaming service from steam seam like a really good idea, and I wanna try it out.
I thinking about buying a Raspberry Pi and either installing a light Linux OS or SteamOS beta on it, and then having the Pi constantly plugged into my living room TV so I can just stream from the computer in my room any time I want with out having to move anything or set anything up.
Do you guys think this is a good idea? If so, which Pi should I buy and which OS do you recommend? (Ideally, I would like a Pi with 2 USB slots for a mouse and keyboard)

You could get a Keybboard with a passthrough USB port plug the mouse into that and have a Bluetooth/WiFi adaptor plugged into the other for a controller

As far as i have seen it isn't available yet on linux, but if you are planning for buying a Pi, you may want the B version. Twice as much RAM as the A version, and actually having 2 usb ports.

You also may want to overclock the pi if you want to do this. But if this won't work, you can always have a go with the other Raspberry Pi projects.

I got one myself, sometimes it causes a little bit of trouble, but i am always happy with it because of the cool things it can still do for about 30 euro's.

Btw, thanks for the idea. Didn't think about it yet.

A great idea, but not necessary for me since my modem is in the same room as the TV, so I can just neatly spring an ethernet cable into the Pi.

By 'it' do you mean the streaming? I thought that was part of the point of it?

Really? I thought the Pi was optimised to play full HD video? Why do I need the OC?

You can't stream a game from a Linux host, but you can play games streamed from a Windows host on Linux
SteamOS isn't available for ARM platforms, it may happen in future, but the PI would definitely be on the lowest side of hardware performance too, and would probably struggle to run BPM adequately enough to be useable.

Ahhh... I see. No problem here.

That's cool, I'll just install a lightweight linux distro (or use one of the Pi optimised ones?).
But what's BPM (sorry if that's a noobie question), and why would you need more than what a Pi offers to do nothing but stream?
Sorry for the double post.

I don't suppose you wanna do me a favour and try streaming to the Pi from a Windows machine, and telling me about your experience?

Why not, i am actually gonna try it for you now.

Maybe wait for a tiny bit, and then i can tell you my experience.

Thanks :D
Please tell me all about your set up as well! (Eg, What model Pi you where using, what accessories where you using (IE, case, SD card, Power supply, Ethernet cable or WIFI adapter etc...), what OS you where using Etc...

Well, from my experiences yet, it isn't possible to get steam on the Raspberry Pi. I found stuff about Limelight and thats what i am going to test right now.

That's such a shame!

Limelight is only for Nvidia, so I won't be able to use it any way :'(

Thanks mate.

I'm hoping that when SteamOS comes out, the community will build and compile a Pi optimised version. I guess I won't be buying a Pi for now...

Its no problem, i am just here sick at home with nothing to do, so i am always up to try something at this moment. Well. PC related then
I have several Pi's at home and I can't imagine that this would work properly on the Raspberry Pi hardware. Perhaps on the Beagle boards.

However, I haven't tested but am most certainly going to this weekend.

For info:

I'll be using a model B Raspberry Pi with standard clocking as well as various different overclocking settings. I'll use Class 10 SD cards(8GB).

I'll try it via it's own internal NIC as well as a USB W/LAN.

I'll be using the internal HDMI port(1080p on a Sony 40") as well as punching it using an AOC USB powered 16" display.

I'll add a Targus 4x USB HUB and the iPad 2xUSB charger that comes with the 1.5amp and 2.1amp USB female ports. I'll power the Pi with the 1.5amp slot into miniUSB and the 2.1amp I'll use for the power portion of the AOC USB display.

I somehow doubt that it'll be able to handle but I'm game!

Will post findings after the weekend.

Good idea! What do you think is the cheapest Beagle I could buy to successfully run and stream Steam?

How? I've done some research and it looks like steam can't run on the RPis architecture...
Thanks for offering to post the results of your tests here and for your info!

EDIT: if nothing works out, it looks like for the mean time it may be worth buying a $200 chromebox and installing a another Linux distro on it. Or even some other NUC or whatever.

There's quite a lot of stuff that shouldn't run on the ARM architecture but with a little fiddle and patience you can make it so. That doesn't mean it's always stable, though.

I'm not sure yet, I haven't tried it. After this weekend I'll have more direction and feedback.
