how to exit stream

Is it possible for the client computer to exit a stream without affecting the host? Like let's say my son's computer is hosting the game, he's playing and I want to watch something in another room, can I then exit the stream when I'm through without interrupting his gameplay? Any way I can find to exit the stream simply closes his game. Even a windowed view would probably be ok or a "view only" mode. Does this exist?

If the streaming client is running on Windows or Ubuntu Linux (etc.) and possibly Mac (untested by me), iow, a proper desktop OS. ALT-Tab out and leave the streaming game window alone in the task bar. Then exit all the way out of (local client) Steam (no tray icon left) instead of closing the stream via the game's quit option in-game. On SteamOS, not sure if/how it would work.

Also, the above is not 100%, sometimes the server will simply crash and disconnect when doing this, requiring a trip back to the server machine to unf**k things. But most times for me it works as expected, the game keeps running and you can reestablish a client stream later.

Kill Steam's streaming client from the task manager.
Also, if you just want to watch your son play, why not just use Steam broadcasting?
