How to know AMD hardware encoding is working? If not, how to enable it?
I recently got an R9 390 and it says "Game polled D3D9 NV12 + libx264 main" using the Steam client beta

What should it say if hardware encoding is working? If that is just software, how do I enable hardware encoding on my card? The steam options have it checked for hardware encoding.

That is a software encoder (libx264 in the name). For AMD hardware encoder the name includes AMF.You can enable the AMD hardware encoder by going to Big Picture Mode, then go to the settings (the cog shaped icon). There go to Streaming and then to Advanced Host Options.

I do have that enabled though http://i.imgur.com/Zq0yZfa.png

I'm using the New crimson drivers btw.

Not those. The settings in Big Picture Mode. Some UI changes are only available in BPM at the moment.

You could at least read the release notes before ranting...

Hello,

In Steam beta update from december 4,
Amf encoding for AMd cards, is now supported by Steam Link.
Before they was asking you switch to another method.

For the next weeks, there will be works on the In Home Streaming client, to fix hardware Amd encoder, if used with Hardware decoder,

(As sayd by the devs on different forums, they are working together with Amd and Windows, to find a fix to the issue, Could be a Codec on windows side, bug, Driver needed to be updated...)

I mean it's not really what the Steam devs sayd i think, but they mean they was working for a fix, and it could take few weeks ;)

To come back to Steam Link, no need to sell it on EBay, there is a refund possible from steam, if you have technical problems unsolved using it.

I managed to get it enabled from the steam link, where the hardware encorder is seperated into the intel, AMd and Nvidia ones, enabled AMD and now it's running great

I have an (pretty old) AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics card and enabled hardware encoding (general + AMD specific) both in BPM and in the Steam Link configuration. But I always see libx264 as the encoder! Does the AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series have no support for hardware encoding? I want to buy a new graphics card soon anyway, but I am interested in the answer.

Hello,

There is a proper discussion thread here:

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream/discussions/0/490125103633036841

And in home streaming with amd cards + hardware encoder on is actually partially/ fully broken.
(Screen flicker while streaming)

We have no official status about possible fix i think.

I dunno about your hd 6800 card.
I have a hd 7870, and it worked fine till the day something broke globally for every amd users.
