Steam thinks my controller is a keyboard/mouse! Help!
When I use the client computer or steam link to run a non-steam game, the host computer thinks the connected controller is a mouse and keyboard. The analog sticks act as a mouse, the right trigger acts as the left mouse button, the B button acts as Esc key, directional buttons act as arrow keys on a keyboard. How do I fix this so that it knows it's an xbox 360 controller?

Hey folks. I'm streaming God of war from my gaming pc to my laptop and I got steam to stop emulating my controller as kb/m. But it seems like it's not taking any input at all now. Any fixes?
In case anyone is still wondering about the OP, Steam added control of this at some point. In Steam desktop client, open View > Settings > Controller > Desktop Configuration and hit Browse Configs at the bottom of the screen. Find "Disabled" and Apply.

To turn it back on I recommend the Chrome Remote Desktop app.

For anyone who sees this thread again, this dude's fix worked like cake. I just changed the template to gamepad and it's all good now.
Turns out it was the new Steam "Xbox Configuration Support" feature. I disabled it and now the controller doesn't do anything in Windows and all my games work again.I found this from web .It works for me.

Bless all of you. Turning off Xbox controller support fixed my problem.
I've found that even with Xbox controller support turned off, Steam will still emulate the mouse and keyboard if it detects that an app has a launcher. Can anyone else verify this?

yes, sometimes xbox controller will emulate a mouse on the remote host even when controller support is disabled on both systems, but i'm not certain about the circumstances that reproduce this.
I have found success in launching the game (Tried FFIX, Dauntless, The Division (non steam))after the game is fully loaded I then plug in the controller. everytime I have done it this way the controller functions correctly instead of as a mouse and keyboard. I have all the controllers turned off in the config also but if I launch with the controller connected it acts as keyboard and mouse if I do the above and plug in after I am loaded into the game it works everytime so far.

I think I had the same problem but I found a solution through the steam link settings. After adding the non-steam game to my library (zsnes in my case) I went in to the controller settings for that game. Uncheck "use steam overlay for non-steam game". That fixed the problem for me. It no longer uses the right joystick as a mouse, B as Escape, etc. Hope this helps.
guys if anyone is still having issues try toggling "xbox configeration support" off. its in controller settings in big picture mode. i was haveing similur problems but turniong the setting off fixed it. Hope this helps
None of these worked for me, im trying to ise rpcs3, but no dice, still registers as a mouse
I had/have this problem with Alice: Madness returns, the game started treating my controller as keyboard and mouse. After many different methods and suggestions I happened to found alternative: after launching game and when the game detects the method, go to Steam Overlay -> Controller configuration -> Browse Configs and choose Gamepad for example. This way we "brute force" the game to accept it as a gamepad and not as kb&m.

Thank you, your tip worked for me.
