"Timed out waiting for stream to launch"
Im trying to use in-home streaming to my TV in the living room using my laptop, sadly i cant get it to work for some reason

ive managed to connect my laptop AND pc to ethernet (obviously in the same network), had to use a switch, by the way.

Every time i try to launch a game it says "Stream Launch Failed - Timed out waiting for stream to launch", and its driving my crazy

for the sake of explanation here is my setup
PC (A): 280x / i5 3450 / 8gb ddr3
Laptop (B): i5 3317u / 4gb ram / Intel HD4000

Im using: Modem with 2 ethernet cables, one directly to my laptop and other to my PC using a switch (because one of the other ports its going to a router)

Modem --> laptop
I
Switch --> PC

Ive even tried directly from the modem but still doesnt work

Any help ? Please ?

hmm in all likelyhood it could be the host blocking the client, or vice versa, but most likely the host, try this, turn off your software firewalls on both host and client just to eliminate them as problems, I use comodo and have had it block in home streaming, I can help you set it up to allow streaming through the firewall if necessary...firewall is important to keep on... also other things that could help if the firewall isn't the problem, if on win 7-8-10, join the host and client to a homegroup. And also make sure there both set to the same workgroup, which by default is WORKGROUP in windows, . but just in case you or someone else changed it...these are the 3 most common things that could potentially block streaming, which is why you are having a timeout on the stream...good luck and i'm willing to help more if necessary. Make sure there discoverable..

Ahm, your network sounds pretty strange. A modem with 2 ethernet ports?! And and an additional router? And a switch? How is everything set up exactly? Sounds like a routing problem, maybe complications with your IP adresses..

If you tell me all IP adress ranges and your exact hardware and the exact way it's been set up, maybe I can help you.

If firewall was disabled, then its unlikely a firewall issue, like tobolus said if its a weird setup it could be a routing issue, although only 2 devices connecting through this should work fine because there all designed to route through each other, but it could be an issue. Knowing exactly how its setup would be a start. Do you have static IP's set? Whats it say under Network and Sharing Center under the connection name? is it Public or Private. Windows 8 and 10 really dropped the ball on network location and sharing in the newer windows. Problem is if it set to Public that may be your problem too. I doubt it because the network should be identified but that may not be the case also. Even disabling the firewall won't fix that. There are Reg hacks and other methods to change network location but its a HACK way of doing it thanks to microsoft and most methods make your computer even less secure. Valve most likely won't take the time to help because its a network issue on your end and streaming is free PC to PC, maybe if you had the steam link they would...

My modem is right next to my TV (where i want to stream), so i put a ethernet cable through the wall into my room where theres a switch, which has 2 ethernet cables, one to a router for an extra network wifi and another directly to my pc.

From the modem i also use another ethernet cable to connect my laptop (where i will stream)

So in the end is Modem -> Laptop and Modem -> Switch -> PC

Its supposed to be private but will check more on the ip adress when i get back from work

By the way, the other router its only to add another wifi network because the place its kinda big and its near every room in the house, the modem is in the living room

It seems like your laptop and your PC are only connected through the modem, that could be the problem. My modem has only one ethernet port, that goes in a router, and then there is everything connected.

Is your modem also a router, how many ethernet ports does it have?

Easiest thing to evaluate if thats the problem, connect your laptop directly to the switch (where the WIFI is currently plugged), or connect to the wlan and try if streaming works. If it does, you need to connect your laptop via WIFI or plug it into the switch directly.

Ok i, somewhat, did it !

I tried to connect by ethernet ports both my PC and my laptop to my router (my modem does indeed works as a router, it has 4 extra etherner ports and wifi) and it works so the problem its my modem

For the record i did this

Modem --> Router --> PC/Laptop and it worked (This router its configurated as a separate network its not extending the original one, its broadcasting its own network)

Modem --> PC/Laptop it didnt work, i tried the original (Modem -> Laptop and Modem -> Switch -> PC) and both directly to the modem

what can be the issue there ? the problem is that the router its in my room and not where i want to play the game (the TV, which sits next to my modem), by the way, it works over wlan from router network but it doesnt from the wlan from the modem

its a Thomsom DWG875EU

"This router its configurated as a separate network its not extending the original one, its broadcasting its own network"

Thats the problem. You have two diferent networks, if not setup properly, errors like the one you are experiencing are preprogrammed. Look up how you could make ONE network in the same IP range (needs configuration of the modem and the router) and you'd be good to go.

It works if connected to the same router, because you're in the same network with both devices and everything works. If you connect to the Modem-Router directly, your PC and your Laptop are in different networks (for example, one network in the 10.0.0.0 (Modem) range and the other one in a 192.168.0.0 (router) range).

If it works all of a sudden with your previous setup, you're good to go for now. But remember: As fast as you got it working, as fast can it change to not working again.

Yeah i still want to create a single network, as i think this fix wont work forever, but for the time being at least its working

thank you for your help, much appreciated
